Vluchtelingenstroom 80

Los desastres de la guerra. Goya.

The artist's fate in the world is to fall from one insincerity into another and to go from one contradiction to another.

In zijn essaybundel The Curtain (2007) schreef de van origine Tsjechische auteur Milan Kundera over 'The Consciousness of Continuity':

Let us imagine a contemporary composer writing a sonata that is in its form, its harmonies, its melodies resembles Beethoven's. Let's even imagine that this sonata is so masterfully made that, if it had actually been by Beethoven, it would count among his greatest works. And yet no matter how magnificent, signed by a contemporary composer it would be laughable. At best its author would be applauded as a virtuoso of pastiche.

historical consciousness is so thoroughly inherent in our perception of art that this anachronism (a Beethoven piece written today) would be spontaneously (that is without the least hypocrisy) felt to be ridiculous, false, incongruous, even monstrous. Our feeling for continuity is so strong that it enters into the perception of any work of art… it is only within the context of an arts's historical evolution that aesthetic value can be seen.

Net als de kunstenaar valt nu eveneens de brave burger 'from one insincerity into another' en 'from one contradiction to another.'

The Republican establishment is frantic over Trump. Trump has called the political establishment's bluff. He has made an end run around their vetting process. This is a replay of Goldwater's nomination in 1964.

The Republican establishment took a dive in that election. It threw the election to Johnson. Now a major neoconservative theorist is recommending the same strategy.

Robert Kagan is a Republican, a former adviser to Hillary Clinton, a 'nonpartisan' Brookings Institution staff member, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of Yale's secret society, Skull & Bones. He is probably the #1 neoconservative theorist in foreign policy. He is part of a family of Kagans who share his views. You can read about him on Wikipedia.

He is at the top of the CFR's academic establishment. He has recently written a column in which he calls for the creation of a third party as a way to stop Trump. He wrote this in the liberal Beltway Washington Post.

'Thus so far the collective Republican reaction to the great question of our time: If Donald Trump wins the nomination, will the party support this would-be authoritarian to inhabit the nation's most powerful office? To watch Republicans and conservatives wrestle with this question is to understand how political parties die and how democracies give rise to authoritarian rulers…

Consider that Trump is displaying these flashes of bullying authoritarianism while he is still courting us. Imagine when he no longer needs to court anyone, when he has amassed a large enough popular following to win the White House. We are supposed to believe that at that point, after a campaign in which his devoted throngs have cheered every threat and insult -- against judges and newspapers and speakers of the House -- he is suddenly going to become Calvin Coolidge (behoudende president die de belangen van de elite verdedigde. svh)?

Trump's supporters obviously aren't worried about any of this. But what about those in the Republican Party who do worry about Trump? Shouldn't they be willing to do whatever is necessary to prevent him from winning the presidency, including voting against him in the general election, if that proves to be the only way?

Yes, there are now woefully belated efforts to block his nomination. But what if these fail, as is quite likely? Are Republican leaders prepared to take the next necessary step?'

North stelt terecht de vraag:

What is the necessary step? To take a dive in November. To let Clinton win. This, from a man who was previously one of her advisers,

The party's bigger problem is that it remains enslaved by the same Manichaean mistrust and intolerance that helped give rise to Trump in the first place. And yes, the other party suffers from that ailment, too. It has displayed its own derangement syndromes, and much of what ails the U.S. political system can be laid at the doorstep of the Democrats. But at the moment the other party is not in the process of nominating a Trump. It is the Republican Party whose failings now threaten the well-being of American democracy. Can party leaders now rise above the party to save it?

What is 'Manichaean mistrust'? It is mistrust regarding the bipartisan political establishment in Washington that favors the present policies of federal debt and inevitable government default. It is hostility to the Council on Foreign Relations and its minions. In short, it is hostility to the Kagans and all that they stand for,

Robert Kagan:

Republican voters and the party leaders who oppose Trump should declare now that they won't vote for him in the general election under any circumstances. If people feel better about voting for a third-party candidacy, if one emerges, that's fine, since any Republican vote going to a third-party candidate is a vote taken away from Trump. If more people made it clear now that they won't ever vote for Trump, it might even help stall Trump's drive for a majority of delegates in the coming primaries and open the way for a brokered convention. But so long as leading Republicans continue to say that, at the end of the day, they will stick with their party, right or wrong, Trump will keep rolling and the nation will remain at risk.

Halliday stelt:

Today NATO is a much more dangerous thug, very violent in manner with questionable purpose but financed and backstopped by an empire in demise. NATO understands its own aggression as a device to encircle the world with military capacity, gift the arms manufacturing corporations amongst its member states with permanent demand and openly threaten states it deems to have potential for competitive leadership. A redundant military alliance today long after the Cold War passed, NATO constantly seeks new resources, new weapons and new members to pursue violence against non-existent enemies, creating opportunities for warfare that require nothing more than dialogue, cooperation in a mature and civilized manner. There is nothing mature or civilized about NATO, or its leadership.

Of course NATO can be viewed from various different angles. Looking from China and Russia, it must appear to be a dangerous fiction of collaboration by countries that have no reason to be frightened or an opportunistic alliance looking for enhanced hegemony and power. These two large sovereign states must see NATO as an opportunistic alliance looking for enhanced hegemony and power. Astonishingly, NATO is tolerated by the same European countries that know the unacceptable horrors of total warfare and have no inclination to return to a living hell. Others like Canada, Australia and the USA that have no in-country experience of modern war are cavalier (onverschillig. svh) with the young human resources at their disposal. They seduce young people into their military forces with handsome financial rewards, and call them heroes when they lose their lives for nought. Extraordinarily, some are warded citizenship posthumously.

As an Irishman, the NATO presence is an unwanted danger to he EU project of active togetherness. To the EU states committed to genuine peacekeeping NATO is an affront. It represents the economic and hegemonic need of American regimes in Washington to continue the occupation of Europe with troops and weapons, including nuclear. Instead, the US should be disarming, and investing in the poverty of its own people, dealing with its economic collapse and adjusting to the pain of a declining empire facing its demise. To most EU members, committed to socialism-light and the use of revenue for the social wellbeing of citizens, NATO has become a redundant, extravagant and unwelcome military toy that gobbles up human and financial resources to no positive end. Worse, under the constant pressure of corporate arms dealers, funding for presidential elections and pathetically beribboned generals NATO has strayed beyond the scope of the original post-World War II alliance into threatening sovereign states such as Iran where dialogue, together with homegrown solutions would likely suffice. And not just suffice, but resolve issues without loss of innocent life, hugely damaged civilian infrastructure and the horror of nuclear weapons.

Further, the United Nations Charter and terms of reference of the Security Council contained in Chapter VII, Article 41 calling for nonviolent action is undermined by a standing NATO military force that anxiously seeks warfare. Perhaps 'undermined' is not the right word, when the same villains driving NATO from Washington, London and Paris make up the majority of the five permanent and veto wielding member states of the UN Security Council. Already corrupted by the self-serving vested interests of the Permanent Five, the employment of NATO as a onetime interests of the Permanent Five, the employment of NATO as a onetime, but no longer regional peacekeeping force is nepotistic (vriendjespolitiek. svh) at its very worst. The vested interests within the Security Council are now entrusted to NATO forces which are led and supplemented by the USA military budget to destroy sovereignty, infrastructure and most importantly innocent lives on a catastrophic scale as we have seen recently in Libya. NATO has demonstrated it can no longer be trusted as a peacekeeping entity by the UN. Genuine humanitarian intervention, or R2P (Responsibility to Protect. svh) as it is known, can never again be entrusted to NATO forces. Clearly NATO has no objectivity in a situation such as the much needed protection of the Palestinian civilian people from Israeli occupation, violation of their human rights and its endless multi-diverse forms of violence.

The danger to global equilibrium is a growing NATO being expanded further by American and British ambitions into a monster military force of world proportions, way beyond any Atlantic or European alliance. NATO expansion, intrusive military hardware, such as cyber technology/interference and the murderous capacity of drones is threatening North/South peace. The creeping slime of NATO expansion into Asia, the attempt to surround Russia, China and others can only end badly for the billions of human beings involved. The recent mini-US occupation of Australia, the interference in the ASEAN countries (Associatie van Zuidoost-Aziatische Naties. svh) by US arms dealers and naval forces, the menacing presence of US aircraft carriers in the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea and the Strait of Malacca should remind historians of just why the Japanese considered it necessary to attack Pearl Harbor to end the US naval strangle hold imposed upon them.

Surely we do not want another global conflagration (vuurzee. svh), started in the Middle Middle East over US protection of energy sources, the poison of Israeli occupation in violation of international law, or internal change within Arab states. The change that is needed is an end to the comfortable US/EU relationships  with   absolute   monarchs,  dictatorships  and military regimes blindly financed by Washington. The human rights and wellbeing of the people of this extraordinary and ancient region of the world appear to have no value in the military-conditioned minds Western democracies, the very states that provide the backbone of  much of NATO's interference and deadly use of force.

The issues for us all, and in particular our young people willing to organize is how to stop NATO's growth into a global power, thereby endangering real human security that does not come from the barrels of any guns, or the use of depleted uranium, or the employment of killer drones and nuclear weapons. Instead, we need a massive reduction in financial resources wasted on military capacity so such monies can be focused on the elimination of the crushing poverty and hunger whereby over two billion persons live with an unacceptable low quality of life. Ending the violence against the environment, the good health of which we humans all depend needs focus and resources. We must all learn accept that real people do not want war, they want love, justice, education and opportunity for better lives now and for their children in future,

aldus de voormalige onder-secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties, die in 2003 'was presented with the Gandhi International Peace Award in recognition of his work drawing attention to the plight of Iraqis.'

I want to say, and this is very important: at the end we lucked out. It was luck that prevented nuclear war. We came that close to nuclear war at the end. Rational individuals: Kennedy was rational; Khrushchev was rational; Castro was rational. Rational individuals came that close to total destruction of their societies. And that danger exists today.

We all make mistakes. We know we make mistakes. I don't know any military commander, who is honest, who would say he has not made a mistake. There's a wonderful phrase: 'the fog of war.' What 'the fog of war' means is: war is so complex it's beyond the ability of the human mind to comprehend all the variables. Our judgment, our understanding, are not adequate. And we kill people unnecessarily.

The major lesson of the Cuban missile crisis is this: the indefinite combination of human fallibility and nuclear weapons will destroy nations. Is it right and proper that today there are 7500 offensive strategic nuclear warheads, of which 2500 are on a 15 minute alert to be launched at the decision of one human being?

Any military commander who is honest with himself, or with those he's speaking to, will admit that he has made mistakes in the application of military power. He has killed people unnecessarily — his own troops or other troops — through mistakes, through errors of judgment. A hundred, or thousands, or tens of thousands, maybe even a hundred thousand. But, he hasn't destroyed nations. And the conventional wisdom is don't make the same mistake twice, learn from your mistakes. And we all do. Maybe we make the same mistake three times, but hopefully not four or five. There will be no learning period with nuclear weapons. You make one mistake and you're going to destroy nations,

Why was it necessary to drop the nuclear bomb if LeMay was burning up Japan? And he went on from Tokyo to firebomb other cities. 58% of Yokohama. Yokohama is roughly the size of Cleveland. 58% of Cleveland destroyed. Tokyo is roughly the size of New York. 51% percent of New York destroyed. 99% of the equivalent of Chattanooga, which was Toyama. 40% of the equivalent of Los Angeles, which was Nagoya. This was all done before the dropping of the nuclear bomb, which by the way was dropped by LeMay's command. Proportionality should be a guideline in war. Killing 50% to 90% of the people of 67 Japanese cities and then bombing them with two nuclear bombs is not proportional, in the minds of some people, to the objectives we were trying to achieve.

LeMay said, 'If we'd lost the war, we'd all have been prosecuted as war criminals.' And I think he's right. He, and I'd say I, were behaving as war criminals. LeMay recognized that what he was doing would be thought immoral if his side had lost. But what makes it immoral if you lose and not immoral if you win?
