Media Corruptie 51

In 1997 verscheen het opzienbarende boek Promised Land, Crusader State. The American Encounter With The World Since 1776, geschreven door de  Pulitzer Prize-winnaar, Walter A. McDougall, Amerikaanse hoogleraar Internationale Betrekking en Geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Pennsylvania, wiens opvattingen door Henry Kissinger in een recensie voor de New York Times worden geprezen met de woorden:

In his sweeping history of U.S. foreign policy, Walter McDougall advances a thoughtful new view of America’s conduct of world affairs over two hundred years. In illuminating the varying principles that have governed our international relations, Promised Land, Crusader State provides a valuable guide for today’s policy makers.

impulses: Enlightenment rationalism, with its universal notions of natural law and human rights doctrine, and a Christian anthropology that stressed the flawed and unchangeable nature of man. The first impulse infused Americans with sublime aspiration, but also tempted them to imagine themselves a kind of Gnostic elite possessed of a universal method for ordering human affairs.

McDougall:

The second, religious impulse infused Americans with humility and caution, but also tempted them to imagine themselves a spiritual elite possessed of a sort of monopoly of truth and called by Providence to right all wrongs,

the distinct belief that the United States is unique, if not superior, when compared to other nations. Champions of American exceptionalism hold that because of its national credo, historical evolution, and unique origins, America is a special nation with a special role – possibly ordained by God – to play in human history. The belief in American exceptionalism is a fundamental aspect of U.S. cultural capital and national identity. It is an essential part of America’s political, cultural, and social DNA,

as the nineteenth century wore on, Americans came gradually to reinterpret their original impulses in ways that eroded the ability of each to act as a check on the other… the assault on revealed religion propelled by ‘higher criticism’ of the Bible, the growing prestige of science, and the power and promise of industrial technology encouraged secular thinkers to act as if their doctrine of progress constituted a veritable religion, complete with a teleology promising that through America the world would approach perfection…

Professor Walter McDougall:

The tendency of Protestant divines at the time of the Revolution to identify New Israel with the United States rather than with the Church Universal was an appalling conceit, however much it encouraged a young nation risking its all for freedom. Then millenarianism, not only in marginal sects but in the preachments of mainstream denominations by the 1830s and '40s, testified to the spread of a heresy: the presumption that man can prepare a place for the messiah (instead of the other way around) and so create heaven on earth... by the twentieth century, politics came increasingly to function as a religion, and religion degenerated into politics. America the Crusader State held that to refrain from trying to change the world was immoral (and stupid).

Wilson:

Since trade ignores national boundaries and the manufacturer insists on having the world as a market, the flag of his nation must follow him, and the doors of the nations which are closed must be battered down… Concessions obtained by financiers must be safeguarded by ministers of state, even if the sovereignty of unwilling nations be outraged in the process. Colonies must be obtained or planted, in order that no useful corner of the world may be overlooked or left unused.

The American Indian is of the soil, whether it be the region of forests, plains, pueblos, or mesas. He fits into the landscape, for the hand that fashioned the continent also fashioned the man for his surroundings. He once grew as naturally as the wild sunflowers; he belongs just as the buffalo belonged.

It is strange to see with what feverish ardor the American pursue their own welfare; and to watch the vague dread that constantly torments them, lest they should not have chosen the shortest path which may lead to it.

A native of the United States clings to this world's goods aas if he were certain never to die; and he is so hasty in grasping at all within his reach, that one would suppose he was constantly afraid of not living long enough to enjoy them. He clutches everything, he holds nothing fast, but soon loosens his grasp to pursue fresh gratifications.

One thought alone preoccupies the submerged mind of Empire: how not to end, how not to die, how to prolong its era. By day it pursues its enemies. It is cunning and ruthless, it sends its bloodhounds everywhere. By night it feeds on images of disaster: the sack of cities, the rape of populations, pyramids of bones, acres of desolation.

The Man Made of Words (1998) zo:

For the European who came from a community of congestion and confinement, the West was beyond dreaming; it must have inspired him to formulate an idea of the infinite. There he could walk through geologic time; he could see into eternity. He was surely bewildered, wary, afraid. The landscape was anomalously beautiful and hostile. It was desolate and unforgiving, and yet it was a world of paradisal possibility. Above all, it was wild, definitively wild. And it was inhabited by people who were to him altogether alien and inscrutable, who were essentially dangerous and deceptive, often invisible, who were savage and unholy -- and who were perfectly at home. This is a crucial point, then: the West was occupied. It was the home of peoples who had come upon the North American continent many thousands of years before, who had in the course of their habitation become the spirit and intelligence of the earth, who had died into the ground again and again and so made it sacred. Those Europeans who ventured into the West must have seen themselves in some way as latecomers and intruders. In spite of their narcissism, some aspect of their intrusion must have occurred to them as sacrilege, for they were in the unfortunate position of robbing the native peoples of their homeland and the land of its spiritual resources. By virtue of their culture and history -- a culture of acquisition and a history of conquest -- they were peculiarly prepared to commit sacrilege, the theft of the sacred.

The willingness to abuse other bodies is the willingness to abuse one's own. To damage the earth is to damage your children. To despise the ground is to despise its fruit; to despise the fruit is to despise its eaters. The wholeness of health is broken by despise. If competition is the correct relation of creatures to one another and to the earth, then we must ask why exploitation is not more successful than it is. Why, having lived so long at the expense of other creatures and the earth, are we not healthier and happier than we are? Why does modern society exist under constant threat of the same suffering, deprivation, spite, contempt, and obliteration that it has imposed on other people and other creatures? Why do the health of the body and the health of the earth decline together? And why, in consideration of this decline of our worldly flesh and household, our 'sinful earth,' are we not healthier in spirit?

Wendell Berry:

Everything in the Creation is related to everything else and dependent on everything else. The creation is one; it is a uni-verse, a whole, the parts of which are all 'turned into one.' [...] If a culture is to hope for any considerable longevity, then the relationships within it must, in recognition of their interdependence, be predominantly cooperative rather than competitive. A people cannot live long at each other's expense or at the expense of their cultural birthright -- just as an agriculture cannot live long at the expense of its soil or its work force, and just as in a natural system the competitions among species must be limited if all are to survive.

Nu is hun strijd onze strijd.

Desalniettemin e-mailde hij me acht dagen later:

Beste Stan
http://www.trouw.nl/tr/nl/4496/Buitenland/article/detail/3808814/2014/12/11/Westerse-leiders-reageren-te-tam-op-felheid-Poetin.dhtml

The Senate Torture Report and Prior Admissions

JURIST Guest Columnist Jordan Paust of the University of Houston Law Center discusses the recently released Senate Torture Report ...
The recently released Torture Report of the Senate Intelligence Committee adds another layer of proof of serial international criminality that was manifestly authorized and/or facilitated by Bush, Cheney, Rice, Gonzales, Rumsfeld, Addington, Rizzo, Rodriguez, Yoo and several others during what George W. Bush admitted in September 2006 was his 'program' of 'secret' detention and 'tough' interrogation tactics.
Later in 2010, in his memoir, Bush also admitted that he had authorized waterboarding. At the time, twenty-nine US federal and state court cases, three cases from the European Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and seven US Department of State Country Reports on Human Rights Practices of other countries had already recognized that waterboarding and related inducement of suffocation are forms of torture. Cheney also admitted in 2010: 'I was a big supporter of waterboarding. I was a big supporter of the enhanced interrogation techniques.' Rice admitted in 2009: 'I conveyed the authorization of the administration to the agency, that they had a policy authorization.' In his book, John Yoo admitted in 2006: 'some of the worst possible interrogation methods we've heard of in the press have been reserved for the leaders of al-Qaeda that we've captured' and, with remarkable candor and abandonment, 'I've defended the administration's legal approach to the treatment of al-Qaida suspects and detainees,' including the use of torture.
As John Yoo recounted in his 2006 book, detention, denial of Geneva protections and coercive interrogation 'policies were part of a common, unifying approach to the war on terrorism;' instead of 'following the Geneva Conventions,' the inner-circle decided whether such 'would yield any benefits or act as a hindrance;' the inner circle knew that following Geneva law would 'interfere with our ability to... interrogate,' since 'Geneva bars ''any form of coercion;'" for the inner-circle, '[t]his became a central issue' and, contrary to time-honored methods of lawful interrogation to obtain reliable intelligence, following 'Geneva's strict limitations on... questioning' supposedly 'made no sense;' they calculated that 'treating the detainees as unlawful combatants would increase flexibility in detention and interrogation;' and the question became merely 'what interrogation methods fell short of the torture ban and [allegedly] could be used' as 'coercive interrogation,' which actually included equally unlawful cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
The Senate Report allows one to add other information about the Bush-Cheney 'program' of enforced disappearance and torture to the Torture Timeline September 2001—2007. Importantly, facilitation of such serial criminality involves criminal complicity, which can occur when a person is aware that his or her conduct (e.g., writing a memo stating that waterboarding is not torture) can or will assist or facilitate conduct of a direct perpetrator. The person who aids and abets need not know that the conduct of the direct perpetrator is criminal or, for example, whether it does in fact constitute torture or some other widely-known and unavoidably criminal conduct such as cruel or inhumane treatment. It suffices that an accused was aware of the relevant factual circumstances. Even a direct perpetrator need not have known that his or her act amounted to an inhumane act either in the legal or moral sense. Furthermore, all acts of assistance, by words or acts and omissions, that lend encouragement or support will suffice if the accused knows or is aware that such conduct can or will facilitate the use of what happens to be an illegal tactic or form of treatment.
The Convention Against Torture and the 1949 Geneva Conventions both require the United States to either initiate prosecution of or to extradite every person who is reasonably accused of having criminal responsibility with respect to torture. President Obama should confirm to the nation that no one is above the law.

Senate Torture Report Ignores CIA’s Most Brutal Crimes

Was2629779

According to the Committee, the CIA lied to Congress, the National Security Council, the Justice Department, and the American public about the severity of torture committed and the effectiveness of information gathered through enhanced interrogations.

The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released a scathing report condemning some of the abuses and torture committed by the CIA’s Rendition, Detention, and Interrogation (RDI) program, but failed to expose the CIA’s most heinous human rights violations. According to the report, the CIA lied to the Committee regarding prisoners’ deaths, the backgrounds of CIA interrogators, threats to detainees’ family members, and the effectiveness of torture.
On November 9, 2005, CIA Director of National Clandestine Service Jose Rodriguez, Jr. authorized the burning of 92 videotapes depicting the harsh interrogations of Abu Zubaydah and ’Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. In response to the destruction of those tapes, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence voted to review the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation program on March 5, 2009. With access to over six million pages of CIA documents, the Committee merely provided a superficial summary without bothering to interview any participants or victims of the RDI program.
Following the tragic events of 9/11, the Justice Department constructed a series of legal memos authorizing the Bush administration’s use of torture against enemy combatants. In 2002 and 2003, Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Yoo authored the torture memos, which were signed by Assistant Attorney General Jay Bybee. The Authorization for Use of Military Force, the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and Executive Order 13440became legal justifications for the utilization of enhanced interrogation techniques and a total disregard for the Geneva Conventions.
Under pseudonyms within the heavily redacted report, two retired Air Force psychologists, Dr. Bruce Jessen and Dr. James Mitchell, received contracts to develop the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques. They decided to reverse-engineer the Air Force’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) counter-interrogation training by inflicting both physical and psychological torture upon detainees. According to the report, they personally participated in waterboarding and interrogating prisoners.
Shot and captured during a raid in Pakistan in 2002, one of the first detainees, Abu Zubaydah, had been recovering in a hospital when he provided information to FBI agents regarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM). Insisting that Zubaydah was withholding more information, CIA interrogators waterboarded him at least 83 times. Although Zubaydah had given up the information about KSM weeks before being tortured, the CIA credits this human rights violation as a success and his interrogation became a template for future atrocities.
Captured in Pakistan in 2003, KSM was transported to a CIA black site in Poland before being transferred to another black site in Romania. While enduring enhanced interrogation techniques, KSM provided false information leading to the detention of innocent people and divulged a fabricated plot to assassinate former President Jimmy Carter. KSM was waterboarded at least 183 times and provided no actionable intelligence or useful information to his interrogators.
According to the Committee, harsh interrogation techniques are not effective means of acquiring intelligence. Under duress, prisoners will say anything they believe the interrogator wants to hear in order to end the torment. Although the CIA claims information acquired through enhanced interrogation has saved lives and led to the death of Osama bin Laden, the Committee has discovered these claims are patently false.
Many of the CIA officers involved in the RDI program had histories of violence, abuse, and sexual assault. Besides waterboarding and beating detainees, CIA interrogators also threatened to rape and murder prisoners’ family members, denied medical treatment for detainees, and repeatedly performed rectal rehydration or feeding without medical necessity. Prisoners with broken feet and sprained ankles were forced to stand for extended periods of time to induce sleep deprivation.
In November 2002, CIA officers left black site detainee Gul Rahman beaten and half-naked from the waist down in an unheated cell overnight. Rahman ended up freezing to death in his cell. In a case of mistaken identity, German citizen Khalid El-Masri was abducted by the Macedonian police and handed over to the CIA. After months of beatings and forced rectal suppositories, El-Masri was released without charges.
Although the report mentions Binyam Mohamed, the Committee neglected to investigate his allegations of torture. Arrested in Pakistan on April 10, 2002, Mohamed was transported to a CIA black site where he was beaten, burned, and suffered cuts along his torso and penis with a scalpel. The US eventually dropped all charges against Mohamed and released him.
Omitted from the summary are the murder of Abdul Wali and the killing of Manadel al-Jamadi. Between June 19 and 20, 2003, CIA contractor David Passaro beat an Afghan suspect named Abdul Wali to death with a metal flashlight. At the Abu Ghraib prison in 2003, Manadel al-Jamadi died in a shower room under CIA interrogation with his arms tied behind his back. Former Specialist Charles Graner, Jr. notoriously posed over al-Jamadi’s corpse for a photo before being charged with torturing his prisoners. Mark Swanner, the CIA interrogator, has not been charged with al-Jamadi’s death.
Also missing from the executive summary is the rendition and torture of an Egyptian cleric named Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr. Kidnapped by CIA agents in Milan on February 17, 2003, Nasr lost hearing in one ear after months of beatings and electric shocks. On November 4, 2009, an Italian judge convictedin absentia 22 suspected or known CIA agents, an Air Force colonel, and two Italian secret agents of kidnapping Nasr.
According to the Committee, the CIA lied to Congress, the National Security Council, the Justice Department, and the American public about the severity of torture committed and the effectiveness of information gathered through enhanced interrogations. The Committee also accused former CIA Director Michael Hayden of lying to the Committee regarding prisoners’ deaths, the questionable backgrounds of CIA interrogators, threats against detainees’ family members, and reliability of information obtained through torture.
Although the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released nearly 500 heavily redacted pages from their executive summary, the full report containing over 6,700 pages remains classified. After CIA agents hacked into computers belonging to members of the Committee and their staff last year, CIA Director John Brennan falsely accused the Committee of stealing classified files in an attempt to suppress the release of the report. As Senators called for his resignation, Brennan was forced to apologize to the Committee.
Instead of holding anyone accountable for devising or utilizing enhanced interrogation techniques, Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Jessen received $81 million prior to their contract’s termination in 2009. Former CIA case officer John Kiriakou was sentenced to 30 months in prison after revealing the torture program during an interview with ABC News. Kiriakou was charged with violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982 by giving Deuce Martinez’s business card to New York Times reporter Scott Shane. Martinez had been a CIA interrogator working for Mitchell Jessen and Associates.
While exposing the CIA’s lies about thwarting terrorist attacks, locating Osama bin Laden, and saving lives through the use of torture, the Committee failed to enumerate the worst atrocities committed in our names. Acting with impunity, the CIA bears a sordid history composed of decades of kidnapping, torture, and assassination with no end in sight.
