'Zionism’s dead end

Separation or ethnic cleansing? Israel’s encaging of Gaza aims to achieve both*
By Jonathan Cook**
28 June 2008
Jonathan Cook argues that the siege of Gaza offers Israel a template to convert apartheid into “transfer”, or ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, by cutting off Palestinian access to aid, food, fuel and humanitarian services, and through state terrorism ‑ sonic booms, random air attacks and repeated small-scale invasions.

In 1895 Theodor Herzl, Zionism’s chief prophet, confided in his diary that he did not favour sharing Palestine with the natives. Better, he wrote, to

try to spirit the penniless [Palestinian] population across the border by denying it any employment in our own country… Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly.

He was proposing a programme of Palestinian emigration enforced through a policy of strict separation between Jewish immigrants and the indigenous population. In simple terms, he hoped that, once Zionist organizations had bought up large areas of Palestine and owned the main sectors of the economy, Palestinians could be made to leave by denying them rights to work the land or labour in the Jewish-run economy. His vision was one of transfer, or ethnic cleansing, through ethnic separation.

Herzl was suggesting that two possible Zionist solutions to the problem of a Palestinian majority living in Palestine ‑ separation and transfer ‑ were not necessarily alternatives but rather could be mutually reinforcing. Not only that: he believed, if they were used together, the process of ethnic cleansing could be made to appear voluntary, the choice of the victims. It may be that this was both his most enduring legacy and his major innovation to settler colonialism.

In recent years, with the Palestinian population under Israeli rule about to reach parity with the Jewish population, the threat of a Palestinian majority has loomed large again for the Zionists. Not surprisingly, debates about which of these two Zionist solutions to pursue, separation or transfer, have resurfaced.

Today these solutions are ostensibly promoted by two ideological camps loosely associated with Israel’s centre-left (Labour and Kadima) and right (Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu). The modern political arguments between them turn on differing visions of the nature of a Jewish state originally put forward by Labour and Revisionist Zionists.

To make sense of the current political debates, and the events taking place inside Israel and in the West Bank and Gaza, let us first examine the history of these two principles in Zionist thinking.

During the early waves of Jewish immigration to Palestine, the dominant Labour Zionist movement and its leader, David Ben-Gurion, advanced policies much in line with Herzl’s goal. In particular, they promoted the twin principles of “Redemption of the Land” and “Hebrew Labour”, which took as their premise the idea that Jews needed to separate themselves from the native population in working the land and employing only other Jews. By being entirely self-reliant in Palestine, Jews could both “cure” themselves of their tainted Diaspora natures and deprive the Palestinians of the opportunity to subsist in their own homeland.'

'Update: Is a New Congressional Resolution Declaring War with Iran?
Emily Blout
Jun 24, 2008
Washington, DC — A House resolution effectively requiring a naval blockade on Iran seems fast tracked for passage, gaining co-sponsors at a remarkable speed, but experts say the measures called for in the resolutions amount to an act of war.

H.CON.RES 362 calls on the president to stop all shipments of refined petroleum products from reaching Iran. It also “demands” that the President impose “stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains and cargo entering or departing Iran.”
Analysts say that this would require a US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
Since its introduction on May 22 the resolution has attracted 205 cosponsors.
In the Senate, a sister resolution S. RES 580 has gained cosponsors rapidly. The Senate measure was introduced by Indiana Democrat Evan Bayh on June 2. It has now accrued 26 cosponsors.
Congressional insiders credit America’s powerful pro-Israel lobby for the rapid endorsement of the bills. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) held its annual policy conference June 2-4, in which it sent thousands of members to Capitol Hill to push for tougher measures against Iran. On its website, AIPAC endorses the resolutions as a way to “stop Iran’s nuclear program” and tells readers to lobby Congress to pass the bill.
Proponents say the resolutions advocate constructive steps toward reducing the threat posed by Iran. “It is my hope that…this Congress will urge this and future administrations to lead the world in economically isolating Iran in real and substantial ways,” said Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN), who is the original cosponsor of the House resolution.
Foreign policy analysts worry that such unilateral sanctions make it harder for the US to win the cooperation of the international community on a more effective multilateral effort. In his online blog, Senior Fellow in the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Ethan Chorin points out that some US allies seek the economic ties to Iran that these resolutions ban. “The Swiss have recently signed an MOU with Iran on gas imports; the Omanis are close to a firm deal (also) on gas imports from Iran; a limited-services joint Iranian-European bank just opened a branch on Kish Island,” he writes.'

Salomon Bouman 26

'Omar Barghouti: Thank you very much for having me here. To be economic, I decided
to write and read. That is the most efficient way in my experience. The title of my paper
is “ending the Nakba, ethical decolonization of historic Palestine”. The idea is to put the
Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger, said Dov Weisglass, Sharon’s
closest advisor a few years ago. Today Israel is in fact slowly choking occupied Gaza to
death. Indeed bringing 1.5 million civilians to the brink of starvation and a humanitarian
catastrophe. Israel is slowly transforming the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, into
cages that make the term “bantustan” sound desirable in comparison. Israel is
systematically causing the slow disintegration of Palestinian society under occupation
through the wall, the colonies and so on and so forth. Israel is slowing turning the lives of
average Palestinian farmers, academics, workers, students, into a living hell designed to
force them to leave. The fundamental objective of Zionism, then, to ethnically cleanse
Palestine of its indigenous population to make room for Jewish settlers, and them alone,
has undergone only one significant change in more than 100 years of Zionist
colonization. It has simply grown slower. While the brutal en masse dispossession and
uprooting of Palestinians similar to what was done by Zionists in 1948 is no longer
practical or pragmatically possible nowadays, a Nakba by any other name is proceeding
before our eyes with deadly precision, persistence and nauseating impunity under the
radar of most of the world. To us, then, the Nakba is not merely about memory and
memorializing. It’s a current reality, lived reality by the indigenous people of Palestine.
And only by de-Zionizing Palestine, only by ending the Nakba once and for all can this
charming, retched, rich, impoverished, peaceful, bloody, inspiring, frustrating place
called Palestine be transformed into a genuinely promising land, not a false promised
land. But why this obsession with Zionism, somebody may ask? Well simply because
Zionism is not simply a racist, exclusivist ideology that has motivated and justified
Israel’s ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians; it also perpetuates conflict, therefore
negating any possibility of ethical co-existence between Palestinian Arabs and Israeli
Jews. At its core, Zionism has consistently viewed and treated Palestinians as what I call
relative humans who are not entitled to the full set of rights that full humans are entitled
to. This view of the Palestinians derives from a colonial mentality that the Dutch, French,
British are, well, used to in their past colonies. But there is also another factor, a very
fundamentalist view of Jewish law or Halacha has informed this Zionism in ways that we
shall see. I will give a few examples. Rabbi Kook the Elder, the first Ashkenazi Rabbi of
mandate Palestine, wrote the following in the early 20th
century: quote “The difference
between a Jewish soul and the souls of non-Jews is greater and deeper than the difference
between a human soul and the souls of cattle”, end of quote. Analyzing the decisive and
decades-old influence such founding conceptions of gentiles have had on Zionism and on
Israel’s unique form of apartheid, one cannot escape the conclusion that the poisonous
cocktail of settler colonialism, fanatic nationalism and Jewish fundamentalism that define
Israel makes it perhaps the world’s most faithful apprentice of 20th
century European
fascist thought. A few recent examples will help elucidate this point.

On July 30th, 2006 during its war of aggression against Lebanon, Israel committed its second massacre in the
little village of Qana in South Lebanon, killing dozens of children and women hiding in
shelters. The Rabbinical Council of Yesha, the highest religious authority among Jewish
settlers in the occupied Palestinian territory, defended the massacre in an official
statement, saying: quote, “According to Jewish law, during a time of battle and war, there
is no such term as innocence of the enemy; all of the discussions on Christian morality
are weakening the spirit of the army and the nation and are costing us in the blood of our
soldiers and civilians”, end of quote. Before the massacre, Israel’s then Minister of
Justice, Haim Ramon, had advocated indiscriminately bombing southern Lebanese
villages, saying: quote, “All those now in South Lebanon are terrorists”, so it’s okay to
kill them. Israel’s most popular paper, Yediot Ahronot, suggested entirely destroying any
village from which a Kaytusha is fired. Needless to say, there was no Kaytusha fired
from Qana before that massacre. In harmony, leading religious authorities in Israel
provided edicts justifying acts of genocide in Gaza. Last May for example, in a letter
addressed to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and published in a pamphlet widely
distributed in synagogues all over Israel, former Sephardic Chief Rabbi Mordechai
Eliyahu ruled that there was absolutely no moral prohibition against the indiscriminate
killing of Palestinian civilians during a potential, massive military offensive in Gaza
aimed at stopping the Qassam launchings. According to Jewish war ethics, he explained,
an entire city holds collective responsibility for the immoral behavior of individuals.
Eliyahu’s son, who is the current Rabbi of Safad in the North of Israel, went even further,
advocating the carpet bombing of Gaza: quote, “If they don’t stop after we kill 100, then
we must kill 1000, and if they do not stop after 1000 then we must kill 10,000; if they
still don’t stop, we must kill 100,000, even a million, whatever it takes to make them
stop.” Stop resisting that is. Resonating with such genocidal sentiments, on 29th
February
2008, Israel’s deputy defense minister, Matan Vilnai, threatened Palestinians in Gaza
with a “Shoah”, holocaust. Telling the Israeli army radio: quote, “The more Qassam fire
intensifies, and the rockets reach a longer range, the Palestinians will bring upon
themselves a bigger holocaust because we will use all our might to defend ourselves.” Of
course, he was alluding to Israel’s nuclear capability. Moreover, at the height of Israel’s
reoccupation of Palestinian cities in 2002, some Israeli soldiers used their knives to
engrave the Star of David on the arms of young Palestinian detainees. In the same year, at
several refugee camps, during mass round-ups of Palestinian males of all ages, Israeli
troops inscribed identification numbers on the foreheads and forearms of Palestinian
detainees awaiting interrogation. More recently, the Knesset unanimously, recently
passed a bill prohibiting animal testing in the development of detergents and cosmetics in
Israel, to comply with EU regulations of course. Very serious in Israel. Ironically, the
Israeli army, in collaboration with research centers, universities and manufacturers of
weapons and security systems, has continued unabated its tests on humans, on
Palestinians, especially in Gaza, using this advantage in marketing. [North] American
author Naomi Klein said such field testing treated not only Palestinians as inmates in an
open air prison but also as, quote, “guinea pigs”. Israel may not be unique, certainly it is
not, in using religious fundamentalism to justify colonial greed or racist policies. White
settlers have committed far worse crimes in the Americas, Australia and so on. But, the
difference is, Israel is doing so in the 21st
Century and is being welcomed as an honorary
member of the elite club of western democracies, whatever that means. Instead of being
treated as a pariah state as it should with boycott, divestment and sanctions, as was
applied against apartheid South Africa, Israel is showered with political, diplomatic and
economic benefits from the U.S. and the EU, even in violation of these own countries’
own laws, not to mention international law and universal human rights. This makes the
EU and the U.S. generally complicit in maintaining the only regime on earth that
uniquely claims a right to have ethno-religious exclusivity and apartheid. Only by ending
this form of apartheid, Israel’s three-tiered form of oppression against Palestinian citizens
of Israel, in the occupied Territories and it’s denial of refugee rights – these are three
forms of injustice – only by ending that can a sustainable, just peace be reached. A
secular democratic state in Palestine offers a true chance for ethical decolonization of
Palestine, without turning the Palestinians into oppressors of their current oppressors.
This de-Zionized Palestine – I’m reaching the end – should allow and facilitate the return
of refugees, and their compensation, grant full, equal and unequivocal citizenship to all
its citizens – Palestinian Arabs, including refugees as well as Israeli Jews – finally,
recognize, legitimize and even nourish the cultural, religious and ethnic particularities
and traditions of each respective community. Only thus can we can end the impasse, only
thus can we have ethical decolonization of Palestine, only thus can we truly end the
Nakba. Thank you.'

"Israel 'will attack Iran' before new US president sworn in, John Bolton predicts By Toby Harnden in Washington Last updated: 9:50 AM BST 24/06/2008 John Bolton, the former American ambassador to the United Nations, has predicted that Israel could attack Iran after the November presidential election but before George W Bush's successor is sworn in.

The Arab world would be "pleased" by Israeli strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, he said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

"It [the reaction] will be positive privately. I think there'll be public denunciations but no action," he said.

Mr Bolton, an unflinching hawk who proposes military action to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons, bemoaned what he sees as a lack of will by the Bush administration to itself contemplate military strikes.

"It's clear that the administration has essentially given up that possibility," he said. "I don't think it's serious any more. If you had asked me a year ago I would have said I thought it was a real possibility. I just don't think it's in the cards."

Israel, however, still had a determination to prevent a nuclear Iran, he argued. The "optimal window" for strikes would be between the November 4 election and the inauguration on January 20, 2009.

"The Israelis have one eye on the calendar because of the pace at which the Iranians are proceeding both to develop their nuclear weapons capability and to do things like increase their defences by buying new Russian anti-aircraft systems and further harden the nuclear installations .

"They're also obviously looking at the American election calendar. My judgement is they would not want to do anything before our election because there's no telling what impact it could have on the election."

But waiting for either Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate, or his Republican opponent John McCain to be installed in the White House could preclude military action happening for the next four years or at least delay it.

"An Obama victory would rule out military action by the Israelis because they would fear the consequences given the approach Obama has taken to foreign policy," said Mr Bolton, who was Mr Bush's ambassador to the UN from 2005 to 2006.''

Hirsi Ali 27

Hirsi Ali: No. Islam, period. Once it’s defeated, it can mutate into something peaceful. It’s very difficult to even talk about peace now. They’re not interested in peace.Reason: We have to crush the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims under our boot? In concrete terms, what does that mean, “defeat Islam”?Hirsi Ali: I think that we are at war with Islam. And there’s no middle ground in wars. Islam can be defeated in many ways. For starters, you stop the spread of the ideology itself; at present, there are native Westerners converting to Islam, and they’re the most fanatical sometimes. There is infiltration of Islam in the schools and universities of the West. You stop that. You stop the symbol burning and the effigy burning, and you look them in the eye and flex your muscles and you say, “This is a warning. We won’t accept this anymore.” There comes a moment when you crush your enemy.R eason: Militarily? Hirsi Ali: In all forms, and if you don’t do that, then you have to live with the consequence of being crushed."

Lees verder: http://stanvanhoucke.blogspot.com/2006/12/hirsi-ali-25.html

'The principal task of these comprador intellectuals is to manufacture, supply, distribute, advertise, and sell a package of knowledge about the trouble spots of the world in a way that both legitimizes the predatory imperial project of their employers and justifies their salary. Azar Nafisi's "Dialogue Project: Culture and Democracy in Muslim World and the West" at SAIS and Abbas Milani' "Iran Democracy Project" at the Hoover Institution are the prime examples in the case of Iran. That the combined scholarly publications of Azar Nafisi and Abbas Milani will not suffice for a junior position in a small town college is the point I am trying to make here. The death of the professor means the birth of the comprador intellectual, or gun for hire...

The problem though is not limited to the fact that these folks are exceedingly illiterate people and have in fact cheated their employers into hiring them for what they cannot deliver. The problem is that what they say sells, and that what they sell helps justify the dropping of bombs on innocent people. Look at the horrid propaganda machinery at the service of the Zionist project here in this country, a project that people like Elliot Abrams are hired to serve: there is, this is what I am suggesting here, a direct relationship between the bombs that Israeli fighters are dropping on Lebanese civilians in Qana with total impunity and the propaganda legwork that people like Foad Ajami and Bernard Lewis for decades and Azar Nafisi and Abbas Milani over the last few years have provided to their employers: services that amounts to positing the so-called "West" as the civilizing arbiter of truth, and as such instrumental in denying, silencing, or criminalizing any voice of dissent that cries against the atrocities and war crimes of the American army in Falluja and Haditha, for example, or of the Israeli war crimes most recently in Qana. There is a vast and pervasive evidence of a general public lethargy in this country, an incredible degree of moral apathy, and a political indifference that I link entirely to the way that this pestiferous propaganda machinery operates and manufactures what I have called a collective amnesia, punctuated by a selective memory. This is what I mean by privatization of knowledge production. Hope this is clear... Scholars like Mahmoud Omidsalar and Dick Davies who have spent a lifetime achieving competence in the work they do are scarcely known to the public at large and career opportunist charlatans are promoted by warmongering PR firms as spokesperson and representatives of a people they wish thus to denigrate, dismiss, invade and dominate.'

Zie: http://www.nos.nl/nosjournaal/artikelen/2008/6/25/250608_gaza.html

'Tactics that ended apartheid in S. Africa can end it in Israel
By Bill Fletcher Jr.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict often inspires a sense of powerlessness. What can average Americans do to bring an end to this decades-old conflict when our leaders have failed so miserably?
And what good is speaking out about Israel's occupation of Palestinian land as the primary obstacle to peace when even former President Jimmy Carter and Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu are condemned for their criticism of Israeli policies?
This month in San Jose, average Americans will have the opportunity to take a stand for peace and justice in the Middle East. The Presbyterian Church U.S.A.'s General Assembly began Saturday and runs through Sunday at the San Jose Convention Center. At the meeting, which takes place once every two years, delegates will make policy decisions for the 2.3 million-member denomination.
They will consider corporate engagement, up to divestment, with companies that profit from the obstacles to a just peace in Israel and Palestine. The church is considering approaches to Caterpillar, ITT Industries, Motorola and United Technologies.
The TransAfrica Forum, an organization which I was honored to head, played a leading role in the movement to end apartheid in South Africa. Corporate engagement was one of the most powerful tools in our non-violent arsenal. It was the right moral decision then and it is the right moral decision now. Just as it worked in South Africa, it can work in Palestine and Israel.
Yet Presbyterian delegates are being pressured to vote against similar measures. Some say the tactic unfairly singles out Israel for condemnation. But it is not the country we condemn; it's a system of segregation and inequality.
The Israeli government has established in the Occupied Palestinian Territories a regime of systematic discrimination. It maintains two systems of laws, and a person's rights are based on national origin. Palestinian land is confiscated to build Israeli-only settlements and roads. Palestinians wait hours in line at more than 500 Israeli checkpoints and roadblocks in the West Bank, while Jewish settlers speed by on modern, well-lit highways.
As Carter, and many Israelis have said, as long as this dual system exists, any peace agreement between Israel and Palestine will be impossible. Palestinians compare Israeli policies to those of apartheid in South Africa. Former Israeli Attorney General Michael Ben-Yair wrote in 2002, "In effect, we established an apartheid regime in the occupied territories immediately following their capture. That regime exists to this day."
South Africans who led the fight against apartheid, like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former United Nations envoy John Dugard, make similar comparisons.
To the detriment of both Israelis and Palestinians, we provide financial and diplomatic support to maintain these separate and unequal policies. Israel is the No. 1 recipient of U.S. foreign aid: roughly $2.5 billion last year alone. Our government has cast more than 40 vetoes in the United Nations Security Council to shield Israel from international condemnation.'

'Home prices post record 15.3% drop
Prices in 20 cities fall for 21st month in a row. One sign of hope: Pace of decline eased in many areas.
Last Updated: June 24, 2008: 11:16 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- U.S. home prices posted record declines in April, extending a painful losing streak for U.S. home prices.

The S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city Home Price Index fell to a record low of 15.3% on a year-over-year basis, and was down 1.4% from March. The 10-city index was down 16.3% year-over-year and 1.6% for the month.

The 20-city index is based on data going back 19 years, while the 10-city index is 21 years old.

There is one sliver of hope. Although every city surveyed posted year-over-year price drops, the month-to-month pace of declines did slow in many cities. And eight metro areas actually posted gains from March to April.

Hard-hit Cleveland was the biggest winner, with prices up 2.9%. Charlotte, N.C. posted a slight gain of 0.2%, up for the second straight month, while Dallas prices were up 1.1% in April, also up for the second month in a row.

"There might be some regional pockets of improvement, but on an annual basis the overall numbers continue to decline," said David Blitzer, Chairman of the Index Committee at Standard & Poor's.

Indeed, there are anecdotal reports that investors have begun to snap up distressed Cleveland properties at very low prices, according to Dean Baker, Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a Washington-based think tank.

"The data suggests that Cleveland has found a bottom," he said, "although it's just one month's data and I wouldn't make too much of it."

The overall price declines have been remarkably consistent through the past two years with prices on the 20-city index dropping for 21 straight months, since July 2006. The 10-city index has fallen every month since June 2006.

What's more, recent drops have been particularly steep. The 20-city index fell 2.2% in March, 2.6% in February and 2.3% in January, and now it has gone down another 1.4%.'

'EU bevriest tegoeden Iraanse bank
Gepubliceerd: 24 juni 2008 13:36 Gewijzigd: 24 juni 2008 13:39
AFP, Reuters, AP

Luxemburg/ Teheran, 24 juni.

'Congressional Resolution Demands Bush Act on Iran
Monday 23 June 2008
by: Maya Schenwar and Matt Renner, t r u t h o u t Report

A non-binding resolution to demand that President Bush impose "stringent inspection requirements" on trade with Iran - language that leaves the door open for a military blockade - will likely come to the House floor this week, according to sources close to Congressional leadership. The legislation, H.Con.Res.362, which is paralleled by a similar Senate bill, has gained bipartisan support rapidly, with more co-sponsors signing on by the day. Once it hits the floor, it's bound to "pass like a hot knife through butter," a staffer in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office told Chelsea Mozen of the nonprofit Just Foreign Policy.
Trita Parsi, co-founder and president of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), concurred, saying passage may happen as early as Tuesday.
"This bill will likely be put on the floor under suspension - meaning that it will pass without even a vote," Parsi told Truthout.
Bills placed under rules of suspension are usually uncontroversial. However, this one is an ominous exception, according to Parsi.
"It sets the stage for a very dangerous escalation," he said.
The most strongly worded section of the legislation is article three, which states: "Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That Congress - (3) demands that the President initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia [among other things], prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program."
The resolution makes no mention of the National Intelligence Estimate report released in December 2007, which found that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons development program in 2003. .. Mozen cites heavy lobbying as one motivation for the resolution's widespread support. The bill was promoted by the highly influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which, according to Parsi, has been the driving force behind its momentum.'

Hirsi Ali 26

Lees verder: http://stanvanhoucke.blogspot.com/search?q=shortcut+to+enlightenment

Zo ja, dan weet ze dat deze auteur van “What is the Enlightenment” rond 1784 het volgende schreef: “The Negroes of Africa have by nature no feeling that rises above the trifling. Mr. [David] Hume challenges anyone to cite a single example in which a Negro has shown talents, and asserts that among the hundreds of thousands of blacks who are transported elsewhere from their countries, although many of them have even been set free, still not a single one was ever found who presented anything great in art or science or any other praiseworthy quality, even though among the whites some continually rise aloft from the lowest rabble and through superior gifts earn respect in the world. So fundamental is the difference between these two races of man, and it appears to be as great in regard to mental capacities as in color,” aldus een van de meest gerespecteerde westerse wijsgeren, de belangrijkste woordvoerder van de westerse Verlichtingsideologie.

De New York Times bericht:

'Muslim women at an Obama rally in February. Last week, two Muslim women were not allowed to appear behind the candidate.

By ANDREA ELLIOTT
Published: June 24, 2008

As Senator Barack Obama courted voters in Iowa last December, Representative Keith Ellison, the country’s first Muslim congressman, stepped forward eagerly to help.Mr. Ellison believed that Mr. Obama’s message of unity resonated deeply with American Muslims. He volunteered to speak on Mr. Obama’s behalf at a mosque in Cedar Rapids, one of the nation’s oldest Muslim enclaves. But before the rally could take place, aides to Mr. Obama asked Mr. Ellison to cancel the trip because it might stir controversy. Another aide appeared at Mr. Ellison’s Washington office to explain.
“I will never forget the quote,” Mr. Ellison said, leaning forward in his chair as he recalled the aide’s words. “He said, ‘We have a very tightly wrapped message.’ ”
When Mr. Obama began his presidential campaign, Muslim Americans from California to Virginia responded with enthusiasm, seeing him as a long-awaited champion of civil liberties, religious tolerance and diplomacy in foreign affairs. But more than a year later, many say, he has not returned their embrace.
While the senator has visited churches and synagogues, he has yet to appear at a single mosque. Muslim and Arab-American organizations have tried repeatedly to arrange meetings with Mr. Obama, but officials with those groups say their invitations — unlike those of their Jewish and Christian counterparts — have been ignored. Last week, two Muslim women wearing head scarves were barred by campaign volunteers from appearing behind Mr. Obama at a rally in Detroit.
In interviews, Muslim political and civic leaders said they understood that their support for Mr. Obama could be a problem for him at a time when some Americans are deeply suspicious of Muslims. Yet those leaders nonetheless expressed disappointment and even anger at the distance that Mr. Obama has kept from them.
“This is the ‘hope campaign,’ this is the ‘change campaign,’ ” said Mr. Ellison, Democrat of Minnesota. Muslims are frustrated, he added, that “they have not been fully engaged in it.”
Aides to Mr. Obama denied that he had kept his Muslim supporters at arm’s length. They cited statements in which he had spoken inclusively about American Islam and a radio advertisement he recorded for the recent campaign of Representative Andre Carson, Democrat of Indiana, who this spring became the second Muslim elected to Congress.
In May, Mr. Obama also had a brief, private meeting with the leader of a mosque in Dearborn, Mich., home to the country’s largest concentration of Arab-Americans. And this month, a senior campaign aide met with Arab-American leaders in Dearborn, most of whom are Muslim. (Mr. Obama did not campaign in Michigan before the primary in January because of a party dispute over the calendar.)
“Our campaign has made every attempt to bring together Americans of all races, religions and backgrounds to take on our common challenges,” Ben LaBolt, a campaign spokesman, said in an e-mail message.'

The Empire 381

"3 in 10 Americans Admit to Race Bias
Survey Shows Age, Too, May Affect Election Views
By Jon Cohen and Jennifer Agiesta

Washington Post Staff Writers Sunday, June 22, 2008; Page A01
As Sen. Barack Obama opens his campaign as the first African American on a major party presidential ticket, nearly half of all Americans say race relations in the country are in bad shape and three in 10 acknowledge feelings of racial prejudice, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Lingering racial bias affects the public's assessments of the Democrat from Illinois, but offsetting advantages and Sen. John McCain's age could be bigger factors in determining the next occupant of the White House.
Overall, 51 percent call the current state of race relations "excellent" or "good," about the same as said so five years ago. That is a relative thaw from more negative ratings in the 1990s, but the gap between whites and blacks on the issue is now the widest it has been in polls dating to early 1992.
More than six in 10 African Americans now rate race relations as "not so good" or "poor," while 53 percent of whites hold more positive views. Opinions are also divided along racial lines, though less so, on whether blacks face discrimination. There is more similarity on feelings of personal racial prejudice: Thirty percent of whites and 34 percent of blacks admit such sentiments.'

'Put oil firm chiefs on trial, says leading climate change scientist

· Speech to US Congress will also criticise lobbyists · 'Revolutionary' policies needed to tackle crisis

* Ed Pilkington in New York
* The Guardian,
* Monday June 23, 2008

James Hansen, one of the world's leading climate scientists, will today call for the chief executives of large fossil fuel companies to be put on trial for high crimes against humanity and nature, accusing them of actively spreading doubt about global warming in the same way that tobacco companies blurred the links between smoking and cancer.

Hansen will use the symbolically charged 20th anniversary of his groundbreaking speech to the US Congress - in which he was among the first to sound the alarm over the reality of global warming - to argue that radical steps need to be taken immediately if the "perfect storm" of irreversible climate change is not to become inevitable.

Speaking before Congress again, he will accuse the chief executive officers of companies such as ExxonMobil and Peabody Energy of being fully aware of the disinformation about climate change they are spreading.

In an interview with the Guardian he said: "When you are in that kind of position, as the CEO of one the primary players who have been putting out misinformation even via organisations that affect what gets into school textbooks, then I think that's a crime."

He is also considering personally targeting members of Congress who have a poor track record on climate change in the coming November elections. He will campaign to have several of them unseated. Hansen's speech to Congress on June 23 1988 is seen as a seminal moment in bringing the threat of global warming to the public's attention. At a time when most scientists were still hesitant to speak out, he said the evidence of the greenhouse gas effect was 99% certain, adding "it is time to stop waffling".'

"US dollar drops as Fed rate rise seen delayed
June 21, 2008

The US dollar posted its biggest weekly decrease against the euro in almost three months on speculation the Federal Reserve will delay increasing borrowing costs to prevent further credit market writedowns.

The greenback fell this week versus all of the other major currencies as Lehman Brothers Holdings said losses at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two largest US mortgage finance companies, may mount. The euro posted a sixth weekly advance against the yen, the longest gain in more than a year, as German producer price inflation accelerated.

''The re-emergence of financial concern places a question mark on the Fed's ability to raise interest rates,'' said Matthew Strauss, a senior currency strategist in Toronto at RBC Capital Markets, a unit of Canada's biggest bank by assets. ''The possibility of a revisit to $US1.60 is still in the cards.''

The Australian and New Zealand dollars posted weekly increases on speculation the countries will maintain their yield advantages over the US. The target lending rates of 7.25% in Australia and 8.25% in New Zealand compare with the 2% fed funds target.

The Aussie dollar was up 0.3% to 95.41 US cents in late Friday trading, pushing its weekly gain to 1.6%, the biggest in almost three months. The kiwi, as the New Zealand dollar is known, traded at 76.20 US cents and also rose 1.6% this week.

Against the euro, the US dollar dropped 0.7% to $US1.5618 at 4:20 p.m. in New York, from $US1.5504 yesterday. It touched $US1.6019 on April 22, the weakest level since the 15-nation euro debuted in 1999. The dollar fell 0.7% to 107.26 yen, from 108. The euro traded at 167.55 yen, compared with 167.43.

The US currency fell 1.6% against the euro this week, its biggest drop since March 28. The dollar rose 2.5% last week, the most since 2005, and touched a one-month high of $US1.5303 per euro after Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said economic risk had faded."

Geert Wilders 6

Gepubliceerd: 23 juni 2008 13:27 Gewijzigd: 23 juni 2008 13:27

Reporters Say Networks Block War Reports
Monday 23 June 2008
by: Brian Stelter, The New York Times

Getting a story on the evening news isn't easy for any correspondent. And for reporters in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is especially hard, according to Lara Logan, the chief foreign correspondent for CBS News. So she has devised a solution when she is talking to the network.
"Generally what I say is, 'I'm holding the armor-piercing R.P.G.,'" she said last week in an appearance on "The Daily Show," referring to the initials for rocket-propelled grenade." 'It's aimed at the bureau chief, and if you don't put my story on the air, I'm going to pull the trigger.'"
Ms. Logan let a sly just-kidding smile sneak through as she spoke, but her point was serious. Five years into the war in Iraq and nearly seven years into the war in Afghanistan, getting news of the conflicts onto television is harder than ever.
"If I were to watch the news that you hear here in the United States, I would just blow my brains out because it would drive me nuts," Ms. Logan said.
According to data compiled by Andrew Tyndall, a television consultant who monitors the three network evening newscasts, coverage of Iraq has been "massively scaled back this year." Almost halfway into 2008, the three newscasts have shown 181 weekday minutes of Iraq coverage, compared with 1,157 minutes for all of 2007. The "CBS Evening News" has devoted the fewest minutes to Iraq, 51, versus 55 minutes on ABC's "World News" and 74 minutes on "NBC Nightly News." (The average evening newscast is 22 minutes long.)
CBS News no longer stations a single full-time correspondent in Iraq, where some 150,000 United States troops are deployed.
Paul Friedman, a senior vice president at CBS News, said the news division does not get reports from Iraq on television "with enough frequency to justify keeping a very, very large bureau in Baghdad." He said CBS correspondents can "get in there very quickly when a story merits it."

Gepubliceerd: 19 juni 2008 13:04 Gewijzigd: 19 juni 2008 13:43
Door een onzer redacteuren

Rotterdam, 19 juni.

Dat meldde The New York Times gisteren.

'U.S. says exercise by Israel seemed directed at Iran

WASHINGTON: Israel carried out a major military exercise earlier this month that American officials say appeared to be a rehearsal for a potential bombing attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
Several American officials said the Israeli exercise appeared to be an effort to develop the military's capacity to carry out long-range strikes and to demonstrate the seriousness with which Israel views Iran's nuclear program.
More than 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighters participated in the maneuvers, which were carried out over the eastern Mediterranean and over Greece during the first week of June, American officials said.
The exercise also included Israeli helicopters that could be used to rescue downed pilots. The helicopters and refueling tankers flew more than 900 miles, which is about the same distance between Israel and Iran's uranium enrichment plant at Natanz, American officials said.
Israeli officials declined to discuss the details of the exercise. A spokesman for the Israeli military would say only that the country's air force "regularly trains for various missions in order to confront and meet the challenges posed by the threats facing Israel."
But the scope of the Israeli exercise virtually guaranteed that it would be noticed by American and other foreign intelligence agencies. A senior Pentagon official who has been briefed on the exercise, and who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the political delicacy of the matter, said the exercise appeared to serve multiple purposes.
One Israeli goal, the Pentagon official said, was to practice flight tactics, aerial refueling and all other details of a possible strike against Iran's nuclear installations and its long-range conventional missiles.
A second, the official said, was to send a clear message to the United States and other countries that Israel was prepared to act militarily if diplomatic efforts to stop Iran from producing bomb-grade uranium continued to falter.
"They wanted us to know, they wanted the Europeans to know, and they wanted the Iranians to know," the Pentagon official said. "There's a lot of signaling going on at different levels."
Several American officials said they did not believe that the Israeli government had concluded that it must attack Iran and did not think that such a strike was imminent.'
