"The best way to respond to such demonization is to show that America is a great nation that makes some mistakes - but it's a great country nevertheless. What's surprised me is that this country is in much less of a crisis that what's being said abroad. Democracy here is more sane than is supposed elsewhere."
"Anti-Americanism is a plague," he said. "Say what you will about America - but it still stands for fighting for truth and justice."'

Zie: http://martijn.religionresearch.org/?p=2430

Gepubliceerd: 21 februari 2008 13:06 Gewijzigd: 21 februari 2008 18:29
Door onze redacteur Joep Dohmen
Rotterdam, 21 febr.

'More than one-third of illegal settlements built on private Palestinian land: Report
The Associated Press

JERUSALEM: More than one-third of Israel's 122 West Bank settlements were built on land confiscated from private Palestinian owners on security grounds, including some erected after the Israeli Supreme Court outlawed such seizures three decades ago, the Haaretz newspaper reported on Monday.Israel's settlements, built on land captured in the 1967 Middle East war, have been a contentious enterprise throughout the decades, and a major source of friction with the Palestinians and the international community.Setlement critics maintain that international law allows the seizure of occupied territory, but only for military needs. In 1979 Israel's Supreme Court banned the military's widespread practice of seizing privately owned West Bank land on security grounds, then turning it over to settlers. The 44 settlements that Haaretz identified as being built on private Palestinian land are home to tens of thousands of Israelis. At least 19 were built after 1979, the newspaper said.Haaretz said it based its report on an Israeli military database whose publication the Defense Ministry is fighting. The Israeli military was not immediately available for comment. The data "prove that systematic land theft for the purpose of establishing settlements was carried out via a fictitious and completely illegal use of the term 'military necessity,'" Haaretz cited attorney Michael Sfard as saying. Sfard represents several Palestinians whose property has been taken over by settlers. The Haaretz article confirmed a report last year by the anti-settlement watchdog group, Peace Now, that about one-third of the land on which settlements stand was seized from private Palestinian owners, much of it after the Supreme Court ban. That report was based on information leaked from the Civil Administration, the Israeli military department responsible for administering civil affairs in the West Bank. Both reports challenge the government's claims that it stopped the land seizures after the ban was enacted. The Defense Ministry has refused to publish its data on settlements, but Peace Now and other organizations have gone to court to have it released under freedom of information laws. A month ago, the Defense Ministry told the court that releasing the information might "damage the state's security and foreign relations."An Israeli government official familiar with the case said at the time that Israel doesn't want the international community to know the true extent of the country's West Bank settlement activity. "Israel won't release the list because it doesn't want to be embarrassed diplomatically," he said.'

The Empire 358

'What Do We Stand For?
By Paul Craig Roberts

Americans traditionally thought of their country as a "city upon a hill," a "light unto the world." Today only the deluded think that. Polls show that the rest of the world regards the U.S. and Israel as the two greatest threats to peace.
This is not surprising. In the words of Arthur Silber:
"The Bush administration has announced to the world, and to all Americans, that this is what the United States now stands for: a vicious determination to dominate the world, criminal, genocidal wars of aggression, torture, and an increasingly brutal and brutalizing authoritarian state at home. That is what we stand for."
Addressing his fellow Americans, Silber asks the paramount question: "why do you support" these horrors?
His question goes to the heart of the matter. Do we Americans have any honor, any humanity, any integrity, any awareness of the crimes our government is committing in our name? Do we have a moral conscience?
How can a moral conscience be reconciled with our continuing to tolerate our government which has invaded two countries on the basis of lies and deception, destroyed their civilian infrastructures and murdered hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children?
The killing and occupation continue even though we now know that the invasions were based on lies and fabricated "evidence." The entire world knows this. Yet Americans continue to act as if the gratuitous invasions, the gratuitous killing, and the gratuitous destruction are justified. There is no end of it in sight.
If Americans have any honor, how can they betray their Founding Fathers, who gave them liberty, by tolerating a government that claims immunity to law and the Constitution and is erecting a police state in their midst?
Answers to these questions vary. Some reply that a fearful and deceived American public seeks safety from terrorists in government power.
Others answer that a majority of Americans finally understand the evil that Bush has set loose and tried to stop him by voting out the Republicans in November 2006 and putting the Democrats in control of Congress – all to no effect – and are now demoralized as neither party gives a hoot for public opinion or has a moral conscience.
The people ask over and over, "What can we do?"
Very little when the institutions put in place to protect the people from tyranny fail. In the U.S., the institutions have failed across the board.
The freedom and independence of the watchdog press was destroyed by the media concentration that was permitted by the Clinton administration and Congress. Americans who rely on traditional print and TV media simply have no idea what is afoot.
Political competition failed when the opposition party became a "me-too" party. The Democrats even confirmed as attorney general Michael Mukasey, an authoritarian who refuses to condemn torture and whose rulings as a federal judge undermined habeas corpus. Such a person is now the highest law enforcement officer in the United States.'

'JFK murder 'transcript' unveiled
Officials in Dallas, Texas, have unveiled the purported transcript of a conversation between US President John F Kennedy's assassin and another man.
The transcript records an alleged conversation between assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby, who killed Oswald before he could face trial.
The two men discuss a plot to kill the president a month before his 22 November 1963 murder in Dallas.
A Dallas official said he did not know whether the transcript was genuine.
Conspiracy debate
The transcript was found in a Dallas courthouse safe with other papers related to the assassination.
Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins said he was told about the contents of the safe when he took office in 2007.
He showed a news conference the alleged transcript, a leather gun holster used to carry the gun that Ruby shot Oswald with, and a movie contract signed by Henry Wade - the Dallas District Attorney when Mr Kennedy was killed.
"We don't know if this is an actual conversation or not," said Mr Watkins.
"It will open up the debate as to whether or not there was a conspiracy to assassinate the president."
Staff at Mr Watkins' office have been busy cataloguing the items since the safe was opened last year.'

"Papers reveal how alleged war criminal escaped UK arrest.

'Scotland Yard allowed a suspected war criminal to escape from Britain partly because they feared an attempt to stop him would lead to a gun battle at Heathrow airport, police documents seen by the Guardian reveal. The former senior Israeli officer was supposed to be detained as he arrived in London for a speaking engagement, after a British court had ordered his arrest. But detectives looked on as he landed, then hid on the plane for two hours, before flying off to avoid arrest.

A British court had issued a secret arrest warrant for Major General Doron Almog for the alleged war crime under the Geneva convention of ordering the demolition of 59 civilian Palestinian homes.

Israeli diplomats were tipped off after Almog's plane left Israel on September 11 2005. Once it landed in London a military attache from the Israeli embassy boarded the jet and warned Almog to stay on board. He refused to leave the plane until it took off again for Israel, two hours later.

The war crimes arrest warrant was issued by senior district judge Timothy Workman, after an application by British lawyers acting for Palestinian victims of the demolition in 2002 in Gaza. Under British law on war crimes UK courts have jurisdiction to try suspects even if the alleged crimes are committed abroad.

Almog, commanding officer of the Israeli defence forces' southern command from December 2000 to July 2003, was due to arrive at 1.25pm on a flight belonging to El Al, Israel's national carrier.

Those who obtained the warrant say police made errors. The document is written by detective superintendent John MacBrayne, from the counter-terrorism command, who was in charge on the day. It was drafted in response to an Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation.

MacBrayne wrote of events the day Almog landed at Heathrow: "Consideration was given to boarding the El Al flight and DSU MacBrayne sought clarification of his powers to do so with those officials present." Top detectives were told that police routinely boarded flights, but were not sure if they could do so without the permission of the airline.

"It was confirmed that El Al were refusing voluntary access to the plane ... another consideration being that El Al flights carried armed air marshals which raised issues round public safety. There was also no intelligence as to whether Mr Almog would have been travelling with personal security as befitted his status, armed or otherwise. DSU MacBrayne took the considered opinion that, as access to the plane would not be consensual, there existed a real threat of an armed confrontation."

Daniel Machover, a solicitor involved in gaining the warrant, said police did not need permission to board the plane, and could also have stopped it taking off until Almog emerged. The document reveals that before the planned arrest Scotland Yard consulted a police unit called the Communities Tensions Team, for advice on reaction in the British Jewish community. A "trusted partner" of the police, a Jewish contact, was also involved.

The warrant, issued at Bow Street magistrates court, central London, is believed to be the first of its kind issued in Britain against an Israeli national over conduct in the conflict with Palestinians. The attorney general would have had to sanction a prosecution before it went ahead.

Speaking days after avoiding the arrest, Almog told the Guardian he was advised not to leave the plane by the cabin crew. "I don't know how he [the military attache] found out but I am glad he did. It was also fortunate that I was flying with El Al as they are loyal. I don't know what would have happened if I had been on a British Airways flight."

Almog said: "As a soldier and a general, I have never committed a crime. Many times I have saved Palestinian lives by risking my life and the lives of my soldiers."'

Elk kind is per definitie onschuldig.
Alleen in Nederland verricht men geen onderzoek hiernaar. And how about our famous freedom of speech. Nietwaar, jongelui?

De Israelische Terreur 324

'Nearly 500 people attended Alison Wier's talks in Greenwich library on Thursday and Saturday (events reinstated after extremist Zionists tried to have it canceled). For those who never heard Alison speak or those who want to share with their colleagues, here is a short video about Alison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDHNNtyjfts
Website: http://ifamericansknew.org/
A lot of media coverage of the controversy but Alison's talks are about how the media choses not to report the reality of Israel and Palestine. In fact, I just took time to write a few snippets of storied from these past few days that you would not have seen on CNN, Fox, Time Magazine, or NY Times:
- After generations of occupation, Valentine's Day has meant little in the Gaza Strip. But the flowers that lovers presented in Europe have. Majed Hadaeid, 43, knows that better than most, as he watches livestock make a meal of the flowers he had hoped to export to Europe. "I have 130 dunams (32 acres)," he says. "All carnations, in 30 different colours, and varieties yielding 16-17 million blossoms per year." In all, about 480 dunams of plantation produce on average 60 million flowers a year in Gaza between mid-November and mid-May. The seasonal export brings five million dollars in revenue, and means 4,000 jobs.
- "Fayezza Qabb, 67 Year old women dies in West Bank Village when Israeli occupation officer at checkpoint refused to allow her to get to Palestinian Hopsital." 2/15/2008
- "The latest round of Israeli massacres in Gaza has resulted in the brutal killings of eight members of Al Fayeq family in Bureij Refugee camp, Gaza City as they sat in their own house. An American-made F16 fighter plane targeted Ayman Al Fayeq’s house in the evening. Ayman, his wife, his daughter, and five other members of the family were found under the rubble. 40 other people, mostly women and children were injured, some critically. The death toll is expected to rise." 2/15/2008
- "The eight-month closure of Gaza has created "grim and miserable" conditions that deprive Palestinians of their basic dignity" according to the U.N.'s humanitarian chief (2/15/08).
- Israeli occupation authorities raided dozens of homes, money changers and
businesses throughout the West Bank stealing hundreds of thousands worth of money and precious items (they gave the public excuse that money was being funneled to support the resistance, what they call terrorism but offered no prof and took no one to court). 2/11/08 http://www.ochaopt.org/documents/Gaza%20Feb_08_2008.pdf
- Amnesty International: Israeli army destroying Palestinian homes "Every single home in the West Bank villages of Humsa and Hadidiya is slated for destruction. The Israeli army has declared most of the Jordan Valley, where the villages are situated, as a "closed military area" from which the local Palestinian population is barred. The local Palestinian population – which has been there since long before Israeli forces occupied the area four decades ago – is being put under increasing pressure to leave the area. In contrast, Israeli settlements – established in blatant violation of international law – continue to be expanded in the area and Israeli settlers are allowed to move freely and use vast quantities of water." http://www.commondreams.org/news2008/0214-18.htm

Betsy Udink 2

'By the time she was re-elected in 1993, she had abandoned all idea of reform, but that she was in a hurry to do something became clear when she appointed her husband minister for investment, making him responsible for all investment offers from home and abroad. It is widely alleged that the couple accumulated $1.5 billion. The high command of the Pakistan People’s Party now became a machine for making money, but without any trickle-down mechanism. This period marked the complete degeneration of the party. All that shame-faced party members could say, when I asked, was that ''everybody does it all over the world,'' thus accepting that the cash nexus was now all that mattered. In foreign policy her legacy was mixed. She refused to sanction an anti-Indian military adventure in Kargil on the Himalayan slopes, but to make up for it, as I wrote in the LRB (15 April 1999), her government backed the Taliban takeover in Kabul – which makes it doubly ironic that Washington and London should be promoting her as a champion of democracy.'Lees verder: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v29/n24/ali_01_.html

Kester heeft duidelijk nog nooit van het boek 'Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001' van Steve Coll gehoord. Coll schrijft:"Every Pakistani general, liberal or religious, believed in the jihadists by 1999, not from personal Islamic conviction, in most cases, but because the jihadists had proved themselves over many years as the one force able to frighten, flummox and bog down the Hindu-dominated Indian army. About a dozen Indian divisions had been tied up in Kashmir during the late 1990s to suppress a few thousand well-trained, paradise-seeking Islamist guerrillas. What more could Pakistan ask? The jihadist guerrillas were a more practical day-to-day strategic defense against Indian hegemony than even a nuclear bomb. To the west, in Afghanistan, the Taliban provided geopolitical 'strategic depth' against India and protection from rebellion by Pakistan's own restive Pashtun population. For Musharraf, as for many other liberal Pakistani generals, jihad was not a calling, it was a professional imperative. It was something he did at the office."Charlie Wilson, een goedbetaalde Pakistaanse lobbyist en voormalig Congreslid voor Texas hield zijn mond. We also gave them fuel, food, communications, transportation. The Taliban rose up and were embraced by us because we saw them as the ticket to our own economic interests regarding Central Asia. [...] They listened to us. They did depend on our blessing so they didn’t want to annoy us."Alleen haar militaire hulp, via de Pakistaanse geheime dienst ISI, die weer nauw met de CIA samenwerkte, verzwijgt ze hier. Indiase geheime dienst: "The heroin dollars contributed largely to bolstering the Pakistani economy, its nuclear programme and enabled the ISI to sponsor its covert operations in Afghanistan and northern India's disputed Kashmir state." (bron: Vital intelligence on the Taliban may rest with its prime sponsor – Pakistan’s ISI)Maar in het 'profiel' van Bhutto door Sacha Kester lezen we hier helemaal niets over.

collegiale groet,

Stan van Houcke'

The War Against Women

'Tomgram: Ann Jones, The War against Women Never Ends

In recent months, Tomdispatch writers have been on the global road. David Morse returned to the embattled Southern Sudan, accompanying three "lost boys" from a bitter, forgotten civil war; Rebecca Solnit went to the impoverished state of Chiapas, Mexico to meet with the women of the Zapatista rebel movement ("Revolution of the Snails"); and Nick Turse voyaged to Vietnam's Mekong Delta to encounter two victims of a past American War ("Two Men, Two Legs, and Too Much Suffering"), who, thanks largely to the response of American Vietnam veterans, will now receive new artificial legs.
Today, Ann Jones, who, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, spent several years as a humanitarian aid worker in Afghanistan focusing on the lives of women and wrote a moving book, Kabul in Winter, about her experience, takes us to West Africa and into the chilling nightmare of women's lives in war-torn lands. This is the first of a series of reports she will be writing for Tomdispatch in the coming months. Tom

The War against Women
A Dispatch from the West African FrontBy Ann Jones

Kailahun, Sierra Leone -- Greetings from a war zone that's not Iraq. And not Afghanistan either.
I'm checking in from West Africa, where I've been working with women in three neighboring countries, all recently torn apart by civil wars: Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Côte d'Ivoire. The Iraq debacle has monopolized attention and obscured these "lesser" wars -- now officially "over" -- but millions of West African women are struggling to recover. For them, the war isn't really over at all, not by a long shot. This is the war story that's never truly told. Let me explain.
Surely you remember these conflicts. Liberia's war came in three successive waves lasting 14 years altogether, from 1989 to 2003. Sierra Leone's war started in 1991 when guerillas of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) of Sierra Leone, trained in Liberia, invaded their own country. The war drew many players and lasted until January 2002, a decade in all. In Côte d'Ivoire, a civil war started in 2002 when northern rebels attempted a coup to oust President Laurent Gbagbo, but by that time the international community had decided to act to prevent any further destabilization of the region. French, African, and later UN peacekeepers stepped in and a treaty was signed in 2003.
So, officially, these countries are no longer "war zones." Accords have been signed. Peacekeeping forces are on duty or close at hand. The UN and international aid agencies are assisting "recovery." Some arms have been surrendered; some refugees have returned from exile. Some men are making mud bricks and building huts to replace the spacious houses of embossed concrete and tile that once graced towns and villages throughout the region. Officially, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Côte d'Ivoire are now designated "post-conflict zones," but they are so fractured, so traumatized, and -- especially in the cases of Liberia and Sierra Leone -- so devastated and impoverished that they cannot be said to be securely at peace either. Sierra Leone has replaced Afghanistan as the poorest country on the planet and, like Afghanistan, it is a nation of widows.'

'Iraq: The Lights Have Gone Out, Who Cares
by Ahmed Ali and Dahr Jamail

BAQUBA - Lack of electricity in Baquba has shattered businesses, and the lives of families. Months of power failures has darkened morale everywhere. In Diyala province, just north of Baghdad, a generation has grown up in dark. The province, and its capital Baquba 40 km north of Baghdad has lived with intermittent electricity supply since the times of the sanctions under Saddam Hussein in the 1990s. Came the U.S. in 2003, and everyone thought it would get better.
“I felt happy when the U.S. invaded Iraq because I thought the electricity problem will be solved, and we would have it all the time like other countries,” Abdul-Kareem Hasan, a trader in Baquba told IPS.
But promises of reconstruction by western contractors proved empty, and there is now less electricity than during the sanctions.
In some cities, homes get electricity just an hour or two a day. Sometimes, there is no electricity for a week. People struggle to get alternative source of electricity.
“Big generators are operated privately for distributing electricity to people,” resident Nihad al-Alwan told IPS. “This process implies that a person purchases a generator of certain capacity and gives outlets to people. Each family takes what they need.”
In Baghdad, that can mean a high bill for electricity in addition to paying for scarce and costly food. In many homes the entire income cannot cover the cost of electricity needs.
The failure has fed anger with the government. “If the government were serious about fixing electricity, they could do it easily,” said Abdullah Jumeel, a local employee.
Businesses are down. “We need electricity to operate the machines, and sometimes we go back home without doing anything,” blacksmith Jabar Ameen told IPS. “If there is no electricity, there is no work — and no money.”
Only those who can pay for big generators can operate their factories or keep shops open. But most businesses have shut shop. “As a result, the number of jobs has become more limited, adding to extreme unemployment,” said 51-year-old resident Majeed Kamil.'
