'Devastating" Moyers Probe of Press and Iraq Coming

By Greg Mitchell

Editor and Publisher
"Buying the War," which marks the return of "Bill Moyers Journal" will broadcast on PBS on April 25.

New York - The most powerful indictment of the news media for falling down in its duties in the run-up to the war in Iraq will appear next Wednesday, a 90-minute PBS broadcast called "Buying the War," which marks the return of "Bill Moyers Journal." E&P was sent a preview DVD and a draft transcript for the program this week.
While much of the evidence of the media's role as cheerleaders for the war presented here is not new, it is skillfully assembled, with many fresh quotes from interviews (with the likes of Tim Russert and Walter Pincus) along with numerous embarrassing examples of past statements by journalists and pundits that proved grossly misleading or wrong. Several prominent media figures, prodded by Moyers, admit the media failed miserably, though few take personal responsibility.
The war continues today, now in its fifth year, with the death toll for Americans and Iraqis rising again - yet Moyers points out, "the press has yet to come to terms with its role in enabling the Bush Administration to go to war on false pretenses."
Among the few heroes of the film are reporters with the Knight Ridder/McClatchy bureau in D.C. Tragically late, Walter Isaacson, who headed CNN, observes, "The people at Knight Ridder were calling the colonels and the lieutenants and the people in the CIA and finding out, you know, that the intelligence is not very good. We should've all been doing that."
At the close, Moyers mentions some of the chief proponents of the war who refused to speak to him for this program, including Thomas Friedman, Bill Kristol, Roger Ailes, Charles Krauthammer, Judith Miller, and William Safire.
But Dan Rather, the former CBS anchor, admits, "I don't think there is any excuse for, you know, my performance and the performance of the press in general in the roll up to the war…We didn't dig enough. And we shouldn't have been fooled in this way." Bob Simon, who had strong doubts about evidence for war, was asked by Moyers if he pushed any of the top brass at CBS to "dig deeper," and he replies, "No, in all honesty, with a thousand mea culpas….nope, I don't think we followed up on this."'

Nu de Nederlandse pers nog! Blijf niet achter, jongens en meisjes!

Irak 202

'US Builds Baghdad Wall to Keep Sunnis and Shias Apart
By Mark Tran
The Guardian UK
US soldiers are building a three-mile wall to separate one of Baghdad's Sunni enclaves from surrounding Shia neighbourhoods, it emerged today.
The move is part of a contentious security plan that has fuelled fears of the Iraqi capital's Balkanisation.
When the barrier is finished, the minority Sunni community of Adamiya, on the eastern side of the River Tigris, will be completely gated. Traffic control points manned by Iraqi soldiers will provide the only access, the US military said.
"Shias are coming in and hitting Sunnis, and Sunnis are retaliating across the street," Captain Scott McLearn, of the US 407th brigade support battalion, told the Associated Press.
The project, which began on April 10, is being worked on almost nightly, with cranes swinging enormous concrete barriers into place.
Although Baghdad is rife with barriers around marketplaces and areas such as the heavily fortified Green Zone, this is the first in the city to be set up on sectarian lines.
The concrete wall, which will be up to 12ft high, "is one of the centrepieces of a new strategy by coalition and Iraqi forces to break the cycle of sectarian violence," US officials said.
The officials said the barrier would allow authorities to screen people entering and leaving Adamiya "while keeping death squads and militia groups out".
The construction - which has been nicknamed the "great wall of Adamiya" - is not the first time US military planners have attempted to isolate hostile regions.'

Verarmd Uranium 7

'Soldier Health Scare Back in News
By Audrey Parente
Daytona Beach News Journal

Lori Brim cradled her son in her arms for three months before he died at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
Dustin Brim, a 22-year-old Army specialist had collapsed three years ago in Iraq from a very aggressive cancer that attacked his kidney, caused a mass to grow over his esophagus and collapsed a lung.
The problems she saw during her time at Walter Reed, including her son screaming in pain while doctors argued over medications, had nothing to do with mold and shabby conditions documented in recent news reports. What this mother saw was an unexplainable illness consuming her son.
And what she has learned since her son's death is that his was not an isolated case.
Lori Brim has joined other parents, hundreds of other sick soldiers, legislators, research scientists and environmental activists who say the cause of their problems results from exposure to depleted uranium, a radioactive metal used in the manufacture of U.S. tank armor and weapon casings.
Health and environmental effects of depleted uranium are at the heart of scientific studies, a lawsuit in the New York courts and legislative bills in more than a dozen states (although not in Florida).
News stories claiming negative signs of depleted uranium's impact, including death and birth defects, are surfacing from Australia to England to the Far East. The controversy rages within government bodies and underlies the theme of TV shows like a recent episode of the medical series "House."
While the military continues to deny the connection of depleted uranium to sicknesses plaguing returning servicemen and women, a newly mandated study stemming from legislation signed by President Bush in October is just getting under way.'

Twan Huys

Sonja attendeerde me net hierop:

Wie is ons, Paul? Wij, blanken? Wij christenen?

An image made from NBC shows Virginia Tech gunman Cho Seung-Hui brandishing a hammer. Cho may have been inspired by the 2003 movie “Oldboy," shown above.

Daan mailde met dit:

'Strange Virginia Tech “Coincidences”

With commentary by DeepJournalOne the one hand the killings by Cho Seung Hui are relatively uninteresting, especially when compared what happend on a daily basis in Iraq, but the excessive media attention and the poor quality of it does make it interesting. Read in relation to the article below also the Prozac angle to the killings in an article by Paul Joseph Watson. More on SSRI, the active component in some antidepressants, in this revealing documentary by the BBC, entitled Secrets of the drug trials; watch it online. The Smoking Gun writes: 'Entitled "Richard McBeef," Cho's bizarre play features a 13-year-old boy who accuses his stepfather of pedophilia and murdering his father. A copy of the killer's play can be found below.' And WikiPedia notes: 'Some of the pictures are similar to shots from the film Oldboy.[28]' Indeed a picture from Cho with a hammer looks very similar to a picture of the main actor in Oldboy, a very artistic and well made movie, that is so violent that some parts are impossible to watch. An article that you can read in the light of the information below was published earlier today: The militarization of neuroscience.

'Nederlandse militair gesneuveld in Afghanistan
Uitgegeven: 20 april 2007 11:43
Laatst gewijzigd: 20 april 2007 14:38

Zie: http://www.nu.nl/news/1049933/23/
Nederlandse_militair_gesneuveld_in_Afghanistan.html

Context:

Van Daan kreeg ik dit gemaild:

'Hallo Stan,
Ik zie dat je schrijft over Cho Seung Hui.Mogelijk interessant voor je zijn de volgende gegevens:Paul Joseph Watson schrijft:'Investigators believe that Cho Seung Hui, the Virginia Tech murderer, had been taking anti-depressant medication at some point before the shootings, according to The Chicago Tribune.
Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, as well as 15-year-old Kip Kinkel, the Oregon killer who gunned down his parents and classmates, were all on psychotropic drugs. Scientific studies proving that prozac encourages suicidal tendencies in young people are voluminous and span back nearly a decade.
Jeff Weise, the Red Lake High School killer was on prozac, "Unabomber" Ted Kaczinski, Michael McDermott, John Hinckley, Jr., Byran Uyesugi, Mark David Chapman and Charles Carl Roberts IV, the Amish school killer, were all on SSRI psychotropic drugs.
Since these deadly drugs are prevalent in almost all mass shooting incidents, where is the call to ban prozac? Why is the knee-jerk reaction always to attack the 2nd Amendment rights of Americans to self-defense, a right that was exercised in January 2002 when students subdued a shooter at another Virginia university before he could kill more than three people because they were allowed guns on campus?'
Meer over SSRI was te zien in deze interessante documentaire van de BBC: Secrets of the drug trials.* 'Entitled "Richard McBeef," Cho's bizarre play features a 13-year-old boy who accuses his stepfather of pedophilia and murdering his father. A copy of the killer's play can be found below.' http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0417071vtech1.html* WikiPedia schrijft: Some of the pictures are similar to shots from the film Oldboy.[28] Een foto van Cho met een hamer lijkt inderdaad veel op een foto van de hoodfrolspeler uit Oldboy met een hamer.

Oplages, winstcijfers.

In Manufacturing Consent- The Political Economy of the Mass Media schrijven Herman en Chomsky over de ingebouwde filters van de commerciele massamedia die de werkelijkheid structureel vervormen: 'The crucial structural factors derive from the fact that the dominant media are firmly imbedded in the market system. They are profit-seeking businesses, owned by very wealthy people (or other companies); they are funded largely by advertisers who are also profit-seeking entities, and who want their ads to appear in a supportive selling environment. The media are also dependent on government and major business firms as information sources, and both efficiency and political consideration, and frequently overlapping interests, cause a certain degree of solidarity to prevail among the government, major media, and other corporate business.
Government and large non-media business firms are also best positioned (and sufficiently wealthy) to be able to pressure the media with threats of withdrawal of advertising or TV licenses, libel suits, and other direct and indirect modes of attack. The media are also constrained by the dominant ideology, which heavily featured anticommunism before and during the Cold War era, and was mobilized often to prevent the media from criticizing attacks on small states labelled communist.
These factors are linked together, reflecting the multi-levelled capability of powerful business and government entities and collectives.'

Vanavond: Persbericht/Aankondiging Shaking up Citizenship18e Globaliseringslezing door Saskia Sassen

Saskia Sassen ontvouwt in haar laatste boek Territory, Authority, Rights.

Psycholoog Roy Baumeister schreef erover in een wetenschappelijk artikel getiteld If You Can’t Join Them, Beat Them.
In Blood and Belonging schrijft Ignatieff: 'I have been to places where belonging is so strong, so intense that I now recoil from it in fear. The rational core of such fear is that there is a deep connection between violence and belonging.'

'The Holocaust as political asset.
By Amira Hass

The cynicism inherent in the attitude of the institutions of the Jewish state to Holocaust survivors is not a revelation to those born and living among them. We grew up with the yawning gap between the presentation of the State of Israel as the place of the Jewish people's rebirth and the void that exists for every Holocaust survivor and his family. The personal "rehabilitation" was dependent on the circumstances of each person: the stronger ones versus the others, who did not find support from the institutions of the state. During the 1950s and 1960s we saw the demeaning view of our parents as having gone "like sheep to the slaughter," the shame of the new Jews, the Sabras, over their misfortunate, Diaspora relatives. It can be argued that during the first two decades, much of this attitude could be attributed to the lack of information and the very human lack of an ability to grasp the full meaning of the industrialized genocide perpetrated by Germany. But the awareness of the material aspects of the Holocaust started very early, with Jewish and Zionist institutions starting in the early 1940s to discuss the possibility of demanding reparations. In 1952, the reparations agreement with Germany was signed, by which that country agreed to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to Israel to cover the absorption costs of the survivors and pay for their rehabilitation. The agreement obligated Germany to compensate survivors individually as well, but the German law differentiated between those who belonged to the "circle of German culture" and others. Those who were able to prove a connection to the superior circle received higher sums, even if they emigrated in time from Germany. Concentration camp survivors from outside the "circle" received the ridiculous sum of 5 marks per day. The Israeli representatives swallowed this distortion. This is part of the roots of financial cynicism that the media is being exposed to today, due to several reasons: the advanced age and declining health of survivors, the intentional weakening of the welfare state, the presence of survivors from the former Soviet Union who are not included in the reparations agreement, the media activism of nongovernmental welfare organizations and the welcome enlistment of social affairs journalists.

They are shocked by the gap between the official appropriation of the Holocaust, which is perceived in Israel as understood and justified, and the abandonment of survivors.'

'Violence and Racism

Two issues jumped at me in the media coverage of violent events recently: the terminology and lack of context on violence. Imagine if a student who happens to be a Muslim and/or Arab carried out the attack at Virginia Tech. Imagine the media frenzy that would have ensued to serve Zionist interests. The religion of the killer in this case was not mentioned. While it was mentioned that he is Asian/Korean no one used terms like Korean Terrorist or Asian Terrorist, let alone Christian Fascist or Christian Terrorist. But such language as Islamofascist or Arab Terrorist is now so common and no talk show (let alone government official) is censored or fired for using them. Does anyone doubt that the interview with the gun dealer would have been very different had the killer been an Arab or even Middle Eastern looking? This is part and parcel of the same mentality that holds that elevates certain victims while dehumanizing others.* The hypocrisy is astounding. While few mumbled things about gun control, few dared to challenge the culture of violence that is promoted at the highest levels of this government, in the media, in Hollywood, and in just about every segment of public discourse in the US. To the detriment of our economic and physical well being as taxpayers and citizens, the racism that begets violence is increasing thanks to the influence of those who unabashedly work to make the US into the image of racist Zionist Israel. Where was the outrage when Imus insulted Arabs and Muslims (a regular part of his show**)?The largest single donor to the Democratic Party is an Israeli by the name of Haim Saban who became a billionaire peddling violent video games (e.g. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers***) and promoting violence in his ever-growing media empire. I think people will begin to see that this horrific violence at Virginia Tech cannot be separated from the violent and racist lifestyles that many lead without even knowing it (games they play, videos they watch, talk show they listen to, movies they attend). It is this normalization of violence and racism that allows people to ignore the role of our government in the violence that resulted in the continued ethnic cleansing of Palestine (70%) of Palestinians are now refugees or displaced people) and the violence unleashed on Iraq and Afghanistan. It is the same ideology of racial superiority that informed US and Israeli collaboration for decades with Apartheid South Africa and the US war on Vietnam. Why is there little in our media bout the hundreds killed at Universities in Iraq**** or the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed thanks to a war of choice built on lies and deception.'

De Israelische Terreur 183

Israeli soldiers using Palestinian child as a human shieldPicture distributed by Rabbis for Human Rights

'Defence for Children bericht:

'PALESTINIAN CHILDREN DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO A FAIR TRIAL UNDER THE ISRAELI MILITARY COURT SYSTEM
In the 40 th year of Israel 's military occupation of the Palestinian territories, Tuesday 17 April 2007 marked Palestinian Prisoner's Day.
Currently there are approximately 380 Palestinian children in Israeli custody, many of whom are awaiting trial or sentence, and others who are serving lengthy periods of imprisonment for such minor offences as stone throwing.
Article 40 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which the State of Israel is a signatory and State Party, gives children the right to a fair trial, the right to liberty while awaiting trial, the right to be heard, the right to privacy, the right to be informed, to have access to a lawyer and support from family and to be treated with dignity during the trial process.
Israel arrests, detains, interrogates, prosecutes and sentences Palestinian children pursuant to a set of Military Orders issued by commanding officers of the Israeli occupying forces, a system which has existed since Israel 's occupation of the Palestinian territories in 1967. Palestinian children who are arrested by Israeli military personnel are deemed by Israel to be offenders against the “security” of the Israeli State and are subsequently prosecuted under the Israeli military system in Military Courts; a system which also prosecutes Palestinian adults.
The Military Court system and procedure, on the surface, can be compared to that of a jurisdiction of criminal prosecution however the specific rules and Military Orders which operate within the Court are conducive to Israel 's occupation of the Palestinian territories and cancel out any opportunity or right a Palestinian may have to a fair trial.
Israeli Military Order 132 defines a Palestinian child as a person under the age of 16 and those children over the age of 16 are sentenced as adults and imprisoned with adults. Palestinian children are subjected to the same arrest, interrogation, trial and imprisonment procedures as adults, by the Israeli State .
Palestinian children, when under the arrest of Israeli soldiers, are not advised of their rights, are not given immediate access to a lawyer or contact with a parent, guardian, other adult relative or an independent support person. Palestinian children are deprived the right to a family visit while held in a detention centre for interrogation, which can last several weeks but even after the conclusion of interrogation, a Palestinian child may remain in a detention centre for an indefinite period where family visits are not allowed. Palestinian children can be deprived a visit from a lawyer while under interrogation for security reasons and under Israeli military law, this can last up to 90 days. In some circumstances, a Palestinian child may only meet his lawyer for the first time at the first court appearance in the Military Court .
Most Palestinian children are detained from the moment of their arrest until the end of legal proceedings. They are usually arrested in their homes in the middle of the night by numerous armed Israeli soldiers and are rarely granted bail by the Military Court .
Palestinian children are interrogated in detention centers and in many circumstances are assaulted, beaten and tortured during the interrogation process. Torture methods include psychological threats of harm to or imprisonment of family members.
The Military Court is neither adversarial nor inquisitorial. Military Court judges are Israeli legal practitioners either employed by or members of the Israeli army, and are not independently appointed as judicial officers through the executive authority of the Israeli government. Military Court prosecutors are also Israeli army personnel.
The Military Court (both the judiciary and the prosecution) relies heavily on the confession of a Palestinian child. In this regard, there are no rules of evidence in the Military Court . A confession is obtained by coercion during the interrogation process. A confession is the main piece of information or “evidence” used against a Palestinian child in the Military Court . A confession is in effect, the prosecutor's case and can also be used to implicate other Palestinian child prisoners both in Court proceedings and in interrogation.
The confession, regardless of how it has been obtained, forms the bases of the indictment against the child. It is what the child has to respond to in entering a guilty or not guilty plea before the Military Court . There are no civilian, forensic or military personnel witness statements, whether oral or written, presented to the Military Court or a Palestinian child's Defense lawyer before this plea is entered. In effect, this shifts the burden of proof on the Defense making it extremely difficult to challenge a confession.
All Palestinian children brought before the Israeli military court are sentenced to a term of imprisonment. Israel uses imprisonment as a measure of first resort for Palestinian children; there are very few cases of children who receive alternative sentences.
During their imprisonment, Palestinian children are exposed to varying forms of punishment for minor offences including being placed in solitary confinement, deprivation from family visits, financial penalties withdrawn from their prison accounts, and ongoing restrictions to going outdoors. Palestinian child prisoners also do not have the same rights as Israeli child prisoners, for example they do not have the right to make telephone calls.
Defence for Children International Palestine views the military system imposed on Palestinian society by Israel as a discriminatory system that violates core principals of human rights. Military Orders and Military Order enforcement officials are tools used by the executive authority of the Israeli government in its occupation of the Palestinian territories, to oppress and suppress Palestinian children, and to overall undermine their right to life, survival and development.'

Human Rights Watch bericht:

'Civilian deaths from insurgent attacks in
Afghanistan increased dramatically over the past 15 months, and many
were the result of insurgents' failure to respect the laws of war, Human
Rights Watch said in a report released today.

The 116-page report, "The Human Cost: The Consequences of Insurgent
Attacks in Afghanistan," describes how Afghan insurgent groups, primarily
Taliban and Hezb-e Islami forces, sharply escalated bombing and other
attacks in 2006 and early 2007. The report is based on dozens of
interviews with civilian victims of attacks and their families and a
lengthy review of available documents and records.

"Suicide bombings and other insurgent attacks have risen dramatically
since 2005, with almost 700 civilians dying last year at the hands of the
Taliban and other such groups," said Joanne Mariner, terrorism and
counterterrorism director at Human Rights Watch. "The insurgents are
increasingly committing war crimes, often by directly targeting civilians.
Even when they're aiming at military targets, insurgent attacks are often
so indiscriminate that Afghan civilians end up as the main victims."

The report documents how, in violation of the laws of war, insurgent
forces have repeatedly, directly targeted civilians for attack, and how even
attacks directed at Afghan and international military forces have often
been launched without due regard for civilian life.

Human Rights Watch has previously reported on numerous cases in which
Afghan government and international forces in Afghanistan appear to have
conducted indiscriminate attacks in violation of the laws of war.

Context: In Blood and Belonging schrijft Michael Ignatieff na een lange reis door conflictgebieden: 'I met lots of young men who loved the ruins, loved the destruction, loved the power that came from the barrels of their guns. Perhaps liberals have not understood the force of male resentment that has been accumulated through centuries of gradual European pacification. The history of our civilization is the history of the confiscation of the means of violence by the state. But it is an achievement that an irreducible core of young males has always resented.'

'Cho Seung-hui was ‘geestelijk ziek’

'Killer sent photographs and video to broadcaster between shootings
By Andrew Gumbel
Published: 19 April 2007
The man who shot dead 32 people at Virginia Tech took time out after committing the first two murders to post pictures and video to a national television network, police revealed yesterday.
Korean-Born English student Cho Seung-Hui sent a CD-Rom containing video footage of himself reading out an 1,800-word profanity-laced tirade about " getting even" and 29 digital photographs of himself brandishing weapons, 11 of which show him pointing a gun at the camera.
NBC Nightly News last night broadcasted excerpts of the video, in which Cho said: "You had a hundred billion chances and ways to avoid today. Now you have blood on your hands that will never wash off."
The package helped answer one of the many mysteries surrounding Cho and his motives why there was a two-hour time lag between the first two killings and the rest of them, which took place in a teaching building housing the engineering department.
It surfaced on a day when numerous warning signs that Cho was psychologically troubled and prone to unusual and alarming behaviour were revealed. Campus police disclosed that he had been investigated for the sexual harassment of two students 17 months ago and was admitted to hospital after he was diagnosed with suicidal depression.'

'Biggest surprise of shooting is that it's no surprise at all
By John Bogert
On Friday my Southwest Airlines flight made a quick stopover in Austin. During the long descent I could see the tall brick tower on the University of Texas campus where, in 1966, a former Marine named Charles Whitman killed 14 people at extreme long range with a hunting rifle. This was after he murdered his wife and mother with a knife, which I mention just to mollify those who might look at this -- the first of our mass school shootings -- and ask, "Then why don't we outlaw knives as well?"

I'd like to claim that my tower view was foreshadowing of the massacre at Virginia Tech, but it wasn't, not specifically. That's because the many mass killings that have come to pass since that first nation-disorienting tragedy in Texas only set in motion a sense of inevitability.
Since then there have been so many senseless gun attacks that we need to graduate the violence in order of magnitude. In 1984, 21 people were murdered in a San Ysidro McDonald's. Two years later a postal worker in Oklahoma killed 14. In 1987, 16 more were shot dead in Arkansas followed by the deaths of 23 diners at a cafeteria in Kileen, Texas, followed by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold going berserk at Littleton, Colo., killing 13 and wounding 23.
For a full and terrible overview of school gun violence, see www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/School_shooting, where you'll notice that this horrible end of our murder-rampage habit began in 1966 and has devolved over the years to include children, teens and outside crazy people, with most of them not mentioned this week because they fall under the four-or-more minimum that seems to be needed to qualify as mass murder.

Most disturbing for me was the Jan. 17, 1989, attack on a Stockton elementary school by 26-year-old Patrick Purdy. A strange loner with a toy soldiers fetish, he used an AK-47 rifle to kill five and wound 30. Numbers are, of course, abstract. What drove this story home was a news photo of a 5-inch steel roof support pipe shot clean through with a bullet from a weapon made to wreak maximum havoc at minimal cost.
By then I had a small daughter in school, and if I needed an example of rampant insanity and the effects of high-powered bullets on tender flesh, I needed to look no further. Which is why the Virginia Tech massacre was at once a surprise and no surprise at all. Even there, in that pretty corner of the Blue Ridge, all it took was the usual combination of loner, unfathomable grudge and easily obtained firearms.
There was a time when I had a lot to say about that, about what Britain's John Major on Monday called a "freedom paid for with infrequent but catastrophic acts of violence." Unmentioned was the 1996 Dunblane Primary School shooting in Scotland where Thomas Hamilton killed 17 students using a nearly impossible-to-obtain handgun. Fact is, we do this sort of thing more than anyone, but mass shootings have occurred almost everywhere.
Which means what? Are we just crazier or have we made gun ownership too easy? Not that it matters because we can't seem to contain, either. Meanwhile, enthusiasts have done such a good job making guns available to people like Cho Seung-Hui that it's beginning to seem that they are right. In a nation where a shooting massacre can erupt anywhere at any time, maybe we really do need to live our lives armed.'

An American Tragedy

'Rupert Cornwell: A brutal truth: Massacre is just part of everyday life in America
You hear no new arguments because, deep down, there is nothing new to be said
Published: 18 April 2007

It is as if we are on autopilot. The ghastly tragedy swamps the news to the exclusion of all else. There are the heartbreaking stories of a university shattered and of the dozens of victims, their mostly young lives cut short so senselessly. We listen to the grief-stricken remarks of the President, and follow the breathless investigation of the perpetrator's background, his history of mental illness. We share the anguished second guessing about whether his murderous rampage could have been prevented. Yet everything is playing to a script we know by heart.
Virginia Tech, of course, is the worst incident of its kind in US history - and at one level, you would gain the impression from American television that Cho Seung-Hui has literally stopped the world.
He hasn't of course. On Tuesday, in what passes for a relatively quiet news day in Iraq, wire services reported the deaths of 56 people in violence across the country: some of them gunned down, some killed by a suicide bomber, some discovered as decomposed or decapitated corpses. But we heard not a word of that, nor of the trial in absentia in Italy of a US soldier accused of shooting dead an Italian intelligence agent, nor of the report that North Korea may be about to shut down a key nuclear reactor (which would be very big news indeed if true.) And somebody shot dead the Mayor of Nagasaki. But who cares? Instead, nothing but Virginia Tech.'

Tony Blair 2

'Tony Blair cannot let go of Britain’s inordinate global powers
By George Monbiot.
Published in the Guardian

The disease that afflicts all British governments is an inability to let go. Unable to accept the end of empire, they cling to past glories. However much they speak of modernity and democracy, they cannot help managing other people’s lives, preserving foreigners – often at gunpoint – from the mistakes they would make if they were allowed to govern themselves.
I was going to call this an imperial delusion, but the United Kingdom has been remarkably successful at defending its powers. Our government has retained a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Its membership of the G8 is unchallenged. Most importantly, it has preserved its unwarranted share of the vote on the boards of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. And it has no intention of giving this up.
In advance of the IMF’s spring meeting (which has just concluded in Washington) France and the United Kingdom rejected any political reform(1). It is true that the fund’s proposals are feeble. It is true that even after far more ambitious reforms the IMF would remain the wrong body, constitutionally destined to fail. But this is not why our government is holding out. It is resisting change because it wants to preserve its imperial rank.
The United Kingdom, with 1% of the world’s population, has 5% of the IMF’s votes(2). Sub-Saharan Africa, with 12% of the population, has 4.6%(3). The UK’s share equals that of China and India put together. It is 5 times as big as Argentina’s, 19 times Bangladesh’s, 35 times Kenya’s, 124 times bigger than Malawi’s(4). The G7 nations – the UK, US, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and Italy – together possess 45% of the vote. The other 177 members are left to squabble over the remains.
Even these numbers tell only half the story. The five countries with the biggest quotas – the US, UK,
Japan, Germany and France – are each allowed to appoint their own executive director to the IMF’s board(5). The rest must submit their candidates for election. Because poor nations don’t know what’s good for them, they are assigned to the tutelage of richer ones. The votes of the English-speaking Caribbean countries are given to Canada. Mongolia is represented by Australia, Kazakhstan by Belgium(6). The reason the UK and France are resisting even the most timid reforms is that these would tip them below the threshold for automatic election: like the other countries they would be represented on the board as part of a bloc.'

The Empire 228

'Military: Global Warming may Cause War.

WASHINGTON - As the world warms, water - either too little or too much of it - is going to be the major problem for the United States, scientists and military experts said Monday. It will be a domestic problem, with states clashing over controls of rivers, and a national security problem as water shortages and floods worsen conflicts and terrorism elsewhere in the world, they said.
At home, especially in the Southwest, regions will need to find new sources of drinking water, the Great Lakes will shrink, fish and other species will be left high and dry, and coastal areas will on occasion be inundated because of sea-level rises and souped-up storms, U.S. scientists said.
The scientists released a 67-page chapter on North American climate effects, which is part of an international report on climate change impact.
Meanwhile, global-warming water problems will make poor, unstable parts of the world - the Middle East, Africa and South Asia - even more prone to wars, terrorism and the need for international intervention, a panel of retired military leaders said in a separate report.
"Water at large is the central (global warming) problem for the U.S.," Princeton University geosciences professor Michael Oppenheimer said after a press conference featuring eight American scientists who were lead authors of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's climate-effects report.
Roger Pulwarty, one of the federal government's top drought scientists, said states such as Arizona and Colorado, which already fight over the Colorado River basin water, will step up legal skirmishes. They may look to the Great Lakes, but water availability there will shrink, he said.
Reduced snow melt supplying water for the Sacramento Valley in California means that by 2020 there won't be enough water "to meet the needs of the community," Pulwarty said. That will step-up the competition for water, he said.
On the East Coast, rising sea levels will make storm surge "the No. 1 vulnerability for the metropolitan East Coast," said study lead author Cynthia Rosenzweig of NASA. "It's a very real threat and needs to be considered for all coastal development."
Rising sea level can harm Florida's biodiversity and be dangerous during hurricanes, the scientists added.
A few hours later, retired Gen. Charles F. "Chuck" Wald focused on the same global warming problem.'

Daar zouden critici serieus over moeten nadenken. Ik ben benieuwd naar jullie reacties.

My Town's Pain»
Madelyn Rosenberg
Just the other day, Blacksburg was a beautiful small town in America. Like yours.

'BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Don't try to make sense of the horrific killings at Virginia Tech, at least not yet. Don't try to make those involved into archetypes -- the gun-wielding loner, the valiant young heroes, the dithering college officials -- and fit them into a familiar, comfortable narrative. Don't rush to draw lessons about guns or alienation or funding for mental health services. Not yet…

The horde wanted to know what Cho was like, whether he had friends, whether there was anything odd or strange about him. Johnson, who is from Annandale, told them that Cho was just a guy he used to see in the hallway. As one group of reporters finished their interrogation and wandered away, another group pushed to the front and asked the same questions, to which Johnson patiently gave the same answers: just a guy who lived in the dorm.
That's not a satisfying answer, because it doesn't advance the story we're so anxious to tell ourselves. We want this tragedy to prove something. We want it to fit some recognizable template. We want it to make sense because, if there is logic to what Cho Seung Hui did, there should be a logical way to keep such a thing from ever happening again.
An element of randomness and unpredictability is part of any event. What if university officials had shut down the campus after the first murders at West Ambler Johnston? Would Cho have been caught? Or would he have gone off campus to a mall or a school and found others to kill?
One reporter kept pressing Johnson. Was there anything, anything at all, that was unusual about Cho?
Johnson deadpanned that anyone who would gun down dozens of people in cold blood was obviously unusual.

Postuum
