Nora Barrows-Friedman writing from Deheisheh Refugee Camp, occupied Palestine, Live from Palestine, 13 July 2006

We woke up this morning to the footage. No less than six hours after we watched, live, the Israeli bombing of a Gaza building last night, the same rogue military turned its jets north to Lebanon to inflict the same. Forty-seven people -- yes, 47 -- have been killed in Lebanon already as i write this. No doubt this is just the beginning. The footage: a man, covered in chalky soot from the Israeli leveling of ahome, carried in his arms the limp body of a toddler. Her arms danglingheavy in his arms, her mop of hair covering her face. Hair that hermother, also killed in the bombing, must have brushed carefully beforebedtime, unable to predict that neither of them would exist only hourslater. i found myself wondering what a last bedtime lullaby sounds like. This is the policy. It is clear that families are the bullseye. Israelkilled 24 people yesterday, including an entire family in Khan Younis, inthe middle of the besieged prison of the Gaza Strip. Mother, father, children. All wiped out. Several days earlier, the same story -- a familytrying to enjoy a bit of a respite between shelling, barbecueing corn onthe cob in their backyard, when a missile landed on their heads. And whocan forget, before the official Israeli seige began late last month, the June 9th explosion on the Gaza beach, which killed seven members of the Ghaliyafamily -- the young surviving girl running frantically between the slicedand charred bodies of her father and mother, six-month-old brother. That young girl, still in chronic shock, has not forgotten. Gazans do not forget. As Israel maintains its ethnic shredding policy, irregardless of age orgender or political affiliation or shoe size or eye color, the international community forgets about Gaza, forgets about Iraq, forgets about Lebanon, about the decades of occupation and sanctions and displacement and expulsion, forgets about the deals made and deals broken, the fake treaties and cynical lip service, about the long lists of international laws carefully applied to other nations but not the US, not Israel. They forget about our snakey and quiet exemption to the Geneva Conventions, the blood that runs in the sewers of Abu Ghraib, of Baghram, of Guantanamo, of Ansar III, of San Quentin, of Santa Rita, of Pelican Bay, of Angola.'

Noam Chomsky 11

Democracy Now interviewt Noam Chomsky over het grootschalig Israelisch geweld:

'AMY GOODMAN: It's good to have you with us. Well, can you talk about what is happening now, both in Lebanon and Gaza?
NOAM CHOMSKY: Well, of course, I have no inside information, other than what's available to you and listeners. What's happening in Gaza, to start with that -- well, basically the current stage of what's going on -- there's a lot more -- begins with the Hamas election, back the end of January. Israel and the United States at once announced that they were going to punish the people of Palestine for voting the wrong way in a free election. And the punishment has been severe.
At the same time, it's partly in Gaza, and sort of hidden in a way, but even more extreme in the West Bank, where Olmert announced his annexation program, what’s euphemistically called “convergence” and described here often as a “withdrawal,” but in fact it’s a formalization of the program of annexing the valuable lands, most of the resources, including water, of the West Bank and cantonizing the rest and imprisoning it, since he also announced that Israel would take over the Jordan Valley. Well, that proceeds without extreme violence or nothing much said about it.
Gaza, itself, the latest phase, began on June 24. It was when Israel abducted two Gaza civilians, a doctor and his brother. We don't know their names. You don’t know the names of victims. They were taken to Israel, presumably, and nobody knows their fate. The next day, something happened, which we do know about, a lot. Militants in Gaza, probably Islamic Jihad, abducted an Israeli soldier across the border. That’s Corporal Gilad Shalit. And that's well known; first abduction is not. Then followed the escalation of Israeli attacks on Gaza, which I don’t have to repeat. It’s reported on adequately.
The next stage was Hezbollah's abduction of two Israeli soldiers, they say on the border. Their official reason for this is that they are aiming for prisoner release. There are a few, nobody knows how many. Officially, there are three Lebanese prisoners in Israel. There's allegedly a couple hundred people missing. Who knows where they are?
But the real reason, I think it's generally agreed by analysts, is that -- I’ll read from the Financial Times, which happens to be right in front of me. “The timing and scale of its attack suggest it was partly intended to reduce the pressure on Palestinians by forcing Israel to fight on two fronts simultaneously.” David Hearst, who knows this area well, describes it, I think this morning, as a display of solidarity with suffering people, the clinching impulse.
It's a very -- mind you -- very irresponsible act. It subjects Lebanese to possible -- certainly to plenty of terror and possible extreme disaster. Whether it can achieve any result, either in the secondary question of freeing prisoners or the primary question of some form of solidarity with the people of Gaza, I hope so, but I wouldn't rank the probabilities very high.
JUAN GONZALEZ: Noam Chomsky, in the commercial press here the last day, a lot of the focus has been pointing toward Iran and Syria as basically the ones engineering much of what's going on now in terms of the upsurge of fighting in Lebanon. Your thoughts on these analyses that seem to sort of downplay the actual resistance movement going on there and trying to reduce this once again to pointing toward Iran?
NOAM CHOMSKY: Well, the fact is that we have no information about that, and I doubt very much that the people who are writing it have any information. And frankly, I doubt that U.S. intelligence has any information. It's certainly plausible. I mean, there's no doubt that there are connections, probably strong connections, between Hezbollah and Syria and Iran, but whether those connections were instrumental in motivating these latest actions, I don't think we have the slightest idea. You can guess anything you’d like. It's a possibility. In fact, even a probability. But on the other hand, there's every reason to believe that Hezbollah has its own motivations, maybe the ones that Hearst and the Financial Times and others are pointing to. That seems plausible, too. Much more plausible, in fact.' Lees verder:

'Israeli air raids on suburbs of the Lebanese capital where Hezbollah has its strongholds killed three people and wounded 55 overnight, police said today. The raids appeared to target Hezbollah's leadership, which is based in the densely Shia Muslim neighbourhoods to the south of Beirut. The Israeli military spokesman's office confirmed the strikes. The Israeli army said it had attacked 15 targets including: a gas depot south of the port town of Sidon, several spots on the highway linking Beirut to the Syrian capital of Damascus, bridges in Beirut and the Hezbollah's headquarters in the southern suburbs.During the night, Hezbollah also fired rockets at northern Israel, causing no damage and no casualties, the Israeli military said.In Beirut, the impact of at least seven missiles were heard before dawn today, according to an AP photographer, reporter and other witnesses. Anti-aircraft fire from the ground echoed in other suburbs of Beirut as the planes roared over the Lebanese capital. The bombs and missiles knocked down a bridge, badly damaged another, sheered off the facades of buildings, blew up windows of apartments and sent walls and balconies crashing on cars parked on the streets.Lebanese TV footage showed that a bomb had plowed a hole in a main crossroad in south Beirut at Mar Mikhail, on the road that leads out of the capital to the mountains and to Syria.A young man with blood dripping from his face and covering his entire bare chest and abdomen was seen on TV walking out of a damaged apartment building.Firemen were seen struggling to put out several fires as glass, aluminum siding and stones littered the streets.A fuel storage tank hit last night at Beirut's airport was still burning. Another fuel tank at the power plant in the town of Jiye 20 miles south of the Lebanese capital was also in flames, hours after the Israeli air force bombed it Friday morningSome news reports said a playground where Hezbollah leaders hold rallies for thousands of supporters was also hit...The guerrilla had warned Israel against attacking south Beirut or the capital itself, saying it would retaliate with rockets against Haifa, Israel's third-largest city. However, Hezbollah denied responsibility for a rocket attack late Thursday on Haifa, saying it would only fire on the Israeli coastal city if the Lebanese capital or its southern suburbs were hit.The Shiite militia, however, has fired volleys of Katyusha and other rockets on northern Israeli border communities.Israel has hit hundreds of targets in Lebanon, closing down the country's sole international airport and damaging the main highway to neighboring Syria. As Israeli ships blockade the coast, the assault has largely cut off the country .Caught in the middle of the fight between Hezbollah and Israel, the Lebanese government has asked the U.N. Security Council to demand a cease-fire by the two sides.Israel says it holds Lebanon responsible for Hezbollah's snatching of the soldiers. But the Lebanese government insists it had no prior knowledge of the move and did not condone it.' Lees verder: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article1174408.ece

'“THE WAR WITH IRAN HAS BEGUN."
Writing from Tel Aviv for the NY Sun, a newspaper that is not only pro-Israeli but often a megaphone for rightist Israeli politicians, David Twersky sees these military exchanges as not a continuation of an old war but the beginning of a new one. He writes: ”The war with Iran has begun.”

”Years from now, the kidnapping of Corporal Gilad Shalit will be regarded like the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Against the backdrop of Kassam rocket fire on Israelis living within range of the Gaza Strip, it was the fate of Corporal Shalit that triggered the Israeli return to Gaza, which in turn brought the Hezbollah forces into the game. Israel is fighting two Iranian proxies on two fronts. It may, or may not, open a third front against a third Iranian proxy, Syria.”

Rack that tape back a minute and be reminded that the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo was the pretext and trigger not for a regional conflict but for a world war, World War 1, “the war to end all wars,” a bloody mess that accomplished nothing except setting a new record in mass mortality: 37 million dead.'

De American Cvil Liberties Union bericht:

'Victims of U.S. Human Rights Violations Tell Their Stories at U.N. Meeting in Geneva.
ACLU and U.S. Human Rights Network Host Panel in Advance of U.S. Session with Rights Committee.

GENEVA -- The American Civil Liberties Union and the U.S. Human Rights Network hosted a panel today of people who have been victimized by the U.S. government's failure to uphold civil and political rights. On Monday, the U.N. Human Rights Committee (HRC) is scheduled to review the United States' compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), a major international human rights treaty ratified by the United State in 1992.
"When the U.S. government fails to protect basic rights there's a very tragic human toll," said Ann Beeson, Director of the ACLU's Human Rights Program. "We call on the international community to condemn the U.S. government for policies that violate the civil and political rights of all."
The HRC's review will be based on the official U.S. report that was submitted last October, more than seven years after it was due. The United States' appearance before the committee will be its second since ratification and the first since the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the beginning of the "global war on terror."
In June the ACLU submitted a comprehensive report to the HRC condemning the U.S. government for failing to comply with its treaty obligations to protect and preserve a range of human rights protections at home and abroad. Drawing particular attention to some of the most vulnerable members of society, including women, children, minorities, immigrants and the accused, the ACLU offered detailed recommendations to bring the U.S. in line with universally recognized human rights standards.
The report, Dimming the Beacon of Freedom: U.S. Violations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, documents the United States record on human rights in five areas: national security, women's rights, racial justice, immigrants rights and religious freedom.
"What I am seeking is an acknowledgement that the CIA is responsible for what happened to me, an explanation as to why this happened, and an apology," said Khaled El Masri, a victim of extraordinary rendition who spoke on the Voices of Victims panel. "It is my hope that the Human Rights Committee will hold the U.S. government accountable for the abuse I have suffered."
Also on the panel were Father Roy Bourgeois, head of "School of the Americas Watch," who was spied on for years by the FBI for organizing peaceful protests; Jessica Gonzales, a victim of domestic violence whose estranged husband killed her three young daughters after police failed to enforce a restraining order against him; Marshan Allen, who was incarcerated as a juvenile and is presently being held for life with no opportunity for parole (participated via a taped video statement); Reverend Lois Dejean, a resident of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina; and Anthony Holmes, a victim of torture at the hands of the Chicago Police Department (participated via a taped video statement).
The ACLU's new Human Rights Program is dedicated to holding the U.S. government accountable to universally recognized human rights principles. The Human Rights Program is charged with incorporating international human rights strategies into ACLU advocacy on issues relating to national security, immigrants' rights, women's rights and racial justice.' Information Clearing House:
'Comparing the cost of war and domestic expenses. By Congressman John Murtha.

We are spending $8 billion a month in Iraq. That equates to $2 billion a week, or $267 million a day, or $11 million an hour. The following are some comparisons between what we are spending in Iraq as we "stay the course" indefinitely and what those funds could be used for instead. I've been fighting for our military to get out of Iraq because I'm concerned about the loss of our troops and the future of our military, and also because I believe they have accomplished their mission there and the Iraqis must resolve their internal conflict themselves. However, I also wanted to demonstrate what these expenses mean to domestic policy in the United States and give you an idea of just some of the things that we could accomplish with this amount of money.
NATIONAL SECURITY

$31.7 billion/yr Department of Homeland Security FY 07 budget

$10 billion (1-time) Equipping commercial airliners with defenses against shoulder-fired

Information Clearing House:
'What Are They Fighting For.

By Prof. Tanya Reinhart

Whatever may be the fate of the captive soldier Gilad Shalit, the Israeli army’s war in Gaza is not about him. As senior security analyst Alex Fishman widely reported, the army was preparing for an attack months earlier and was constantly pushing for it, with the goal of destroying the Hamas infrastructure and its government. The army initiated an escalation on 8 June when it assassinated Abu Samhadana, a senior appointee of the Hamas government, and intensified its shelling of civilians in the Gaza Strip. Governmental authorization for action on a larger scale was already given by 12 June, but it was postponed in the wake of the global reverberation caused by the killing of civilians in the air force bombing the next day. The abduction of the soldier released the safety-catch, and the operation began on 28 June with the destruction of infrastructure in Gaza and the mass detention of the Hamas leadership in the West Bank, which was also planned weeks in advance. (1)In Israeli discourse, Israel ended the occupation in Gaza when it evacuated its settlers from the Strip, and the Palestinians’ behavior therefore constitutes ingratitude. But there is nothing further from reality than this description. In fact, as was already stipulated in the Disengagement Plan, Gaza remained under complete Israeli military control, operating from outside. Israel prevented any possibility of economic independence for the Strip and from the very beginning, Israel did not implement a single one of the clauses of the agreement on border-crossings of November 2005. Israel simply substituted the expensive occupation of Gaza with a cheap occupation, one which in Israel’s view exempts it from the occupier’s responsibility to maintain the Strip, and from concern for the welfare and the lives of its million and a half residents, as determined in the fourth Geneva convention. Israel does not need this piece of land, one of the most densely populated in the world, and lacking any natural resources. The problem is that one cannot let Gaza free, if one wants to keep the West Bank. A third of the occupied Palestinians live in the Gaza strip. If they are given freedom, they would become the center of Palestinian struggle for liberation, with free access to the Western and Arab world. To control the West Bank, Israel needs full control Gaza. The new form of control Israel has developed is turning the whole of the Strip into a prison camp completely sealed from the world.Besieged occupied people with nothing to hope for, and no alternative means of political struggle, will always seek ways to fight their oppressor. The imprisoned Gaza Palestinians found a way to disturb the life of the Israelis in the vicinity of the Strip, by launching home-made Qassam rockets across the Gaza wall against Israeli towns bordering the Strip. These primitive rockets lack the precision to focus on a target, and have rarely caused Israeli casualties; they do however cause physical and psychological damage and seriously disturb life in the targeted Israeli neighborhoods. In the eyes of many Palestinians, the Qassams are a response to the war Israel has declared on them. As a student from Gaza said to the New York Times, “Why should we be the only ones who live in fear? With these rockets, the Israelis feel fear, too. We will have to live in peace together, or live in fear together.” ' Lees verder: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article13974.htm

Robert Fisk 13

Robert Fisk schrijft:

'Beirut waits as Syrian masters send Hezbollah allies into battle By Robert Fisk07/13/06 "The Independent" --- - It's about Syria. That was the frightening message delivered by Damascus yesterday when it allowed its Hizbollah allies to cross the UN Blue Line in southern Lebanon, kill three Israeli soldiers, capture two others and demand the release of Lebanese prisoners in Israeli jails. Within hours, a country that had begun to believe in peace - without a single Syrian soldier left on its soil - found itself once more at war.Israel held the powerless Lebanese government responsible - as if the sectarian and divided cabinet in Beirut can control Hizbollah. That is Syria's message. Fouad Siniora, Lebanon's affable Prime Minister, may have thought he was running the country but it is President Bashar Assad in Damascus who can still bring life or death to a land that lost 150,000 lives in 15 years of civil conflict. And there is one certain bet that Syria will rely on; that despite all Israel's threats of inflicting "pain" on Lebanon, this war will run out of control until - as has so often happened in the past - Israel itself calls for a ceasefire and releases prisoners. Then the international big-hitters will arrive and make their way to the real Lebanese capital - Damascus, not Beirut - and appeal for help. That is probably the plan. But will it work? Israel has threatened Lebanon's newly installed infrastructure and Hizbollah has threatened Israel with further conflict. And therein lies the problem; to get at Hizbollah, Israel must send its soldiers into Lebanon - and then it will lose more soldiers.Indeed when a single Merkava tank crossed the border into Lebanon yesterday morning, it struck a Hizbollah mine, which killed three more Israelis.Certainly Hizbollah's attack broke the United Nations rules in southern Lebanon - a "violent breach" of the Blue Line, it was called by Geir Pedersen, the senior UN official in the country - and was bound to unleash the air force, tanks and gunboats of Israel on to this frail, dangerous country. Many Lebanese in Beirut were outraged when gangs of Hizbollah supporters drove through the streets of the capital with party flags to "celebrate" the attack on the border.Christian members of the Lebanese government were voicing increasing frustration at the Shia Muslim militia's actions - which only proved how powerless the Beirut administration is.By nightfall, Israel's air raids had begun to spread across the country - the first civilians to die were killed when an aircraft bombed a small road bridge at Qasmiyeh - but would they go even further and include a target in Syria? This would be the gravest escalation so far and would have US as well as UN diplomats appealing for that familiar, tired quality - "restraint".And prisoner swaps is probably all that will come of this. In January 2004, for example, Israel freed 436 Arab prisoners and released the bodies of 59 Lebanese for burial, in return for an Israeli spy and the bodies of three Israeli soldiers.'

Clayton E. Swisher, a former Marine reservist and federal criminal investigator, was educated as the University of Pittsburgh, Georgetown University, and is director of programs at the nonprofit Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C. Swisher is the author of "The Truth about Camp David" (Nation Books, 2004). This article first appeared in The Daily Kos on 12 July 2006 and is reprinted with the author's permission.

Even before the Lebanese-based Hezbollah took two Israeli prisoners of war today, I ended my trip to Beirut last week with the feeling that, beneath the beautiful, vibrant country there remained serious political tectonic plates waiting for any excuse to slip. I had conversations and visits over a two week period with Lebanese people of all stripes ? from the pro-democracy/anti-Syrian political elite, to Hamas, to the downtrodden Palestinian refugees, to the average Mohammad ? and I left with the unmistakable impression that American interests are screwed.

Israel's invasion today into South Lebanon and the ongoing air strikes against Lebanon's infrastructure exceeded my worst predictions. Whether you agree or not, three points below explain the context of what is happening now in Lebanon and why the US-Israeli response is bound to cast America deeper into the Mideast abyss, further undermining the (albeit badly) damaged image of US forces while crippling our efforts to sway the global recruits from the growing appeal of Bin Laden.

First, the Bush Administration does not stand for genuine democracy. For months people in the Arab and Muslim world have watched the US and Israel punish the entire Palestinian population for casting its ballot in the January parliamentary elections in which the Hamas party won a majority of seats. The Bush Administration has overtly promoted a soft coup to bring down the Hamas government via economic strangulation. The Palestinians are badly suffering what the United Nations describes as a "humanitarian crisis" and, rather than blaming Hamas ? as Bush's NSC policy brainchildren envisioned ? the whole Arab and Muslim world is squarely blaming not only Israel but the United States. Many Lebanese people blame Palestinians for ruining their country, yet are still repulsed by America's treatment of Hamas. They are distancing themselves from Washington politicians who once heralded Lebanon for its democratic advancements following the so-called "Cedar Revolution." Alliance with America is the kiss of death as the Islamists continue to win popularity with the Arab street all over the Middle East.

Second, the Bush Administration does not stand for genuine freedom as it believes that the Arab people have no right whatsoever to defend themselves and resist the violent and oppressive Israeli occupation. For the past three weeks, people in the Arab and Muslim world have had their TV sets on, and not just to see the World Cup. One would have to be hidden in a remote cave to not see the constant stream of new and increasingly horrific images beaming in from not only Iraq but Gaza, where the US' strongest ally ? Israel, using American-made weapons ? pummel the 1.4 million Palestinians of Gaza for the kidnapping and taking of a single Israeli POW during a Hamas military operation. The Hamas operation was in response to the daily shelling of northern Gaza in which a girl lost her entire family during a picnic at the beach. For once, Hamas sidesteps its abhorrent terror tactics, launches a military operation against a military target and takes a military hostage. America issues the usual condemnation, blames Hamas, Iran, and Syria, and offers Israel a free hand to continue "defending herself." Amnesty International bericht:

'AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PRESS RELEASE AI Index: MDE 15/064/2006 (Public) News Service No: 182 13 July 2006

Israel / Lebanon: End immediately attacks against civilians The Israeli and Lebanese governments, and Hizbullah, must take immediate steps to end the ongoing attacks against civilians and civilian objects. Such attacks are a blatant breach of international humanitarian law and amount to war crimes. It is vital at this time of rapidly rising tension that all parties observe the requirements of international humanitarian law, and that other governments take all appropriate steps to insist that they do so. “Israel must put an immediate end to attacks against civilians and against civilian infrastructure in Lebanon, which constitute collective punishment. Israel must also respect the principle of proportionality when targeting any military objectives or civilian objectives that may be used for military purposes,” said Malcolm Smart, Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East Programme. “Hizbullah must stop launching attacks against Israeli civilians and it must treat humanely the two Israeli soldiers it captured on 12 July and grant them immediate access to the International Committee of the Red Cross,” said Malcolm Smart. The organization also called on the Lebanese government to take concrete measures to ensure that Hizbullah complies with these obligations under international law. Background Some 40 Lebanese civilians have reportedly been killed in Israeli air strikes and artillery shelling against villages in South Lebanon since yesterday’s cross-border attack by Hizbullah’s armed wing, in which two Israeli soldiers were captured and eight others killed. Among the Lebanese victims were a family of ten, including eight children, who were killed in Dweir village, near Nabatiyeh, and a family of seven, including a seven-month-old baby, who were killed in Baflay village near Tyre. More than 60 other civilians were injured in these or other attacks. Israeli forces have also launched deliberate attacks against civilian objects throughout Lebanon, including Beirut international airport, 10 bridges and an electricity power station, as well as against Hizbullah targets, notably the offices of its al-Manar television station in Beirut and its relay station in Baalbek. At the same time, Hizbullah has been launching Katyusha rockets into Northern Israel. An Israeli woman was killed and dozens of other civilians were injured when a Katyusha rocket hit a house in the town of Nahariya earlier today. The Fourth Geneva Convention, prohibits "collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism …" (Article 33). According to Article 147 of the Convention, "extensive destruction ... not justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully and wantonly," hostage-taking and "torture or inhuman treatment" are grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions and constitute war crimes. All state parties to the Convention are required to search for and ensure the prosecution of perpetrators of grave breaches of the said Convention. Protocol I Additional to the Geneva Conventions codifies the principle of distinction, a customary rule of international humanitarian law: "In order to ensure respect for and protection of the civilian population and civilian objects, the Parties to the conflict shall at all times distinguish between the civilian population and combatants and between civilian objects and military objectives and accordingly shall direct their operation only against military objectives." (Article 48). International Humanitarian Law strictly prohibits attacks against civilians and civilian objects. The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) includes as war crimes: “Intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population as such or against individual civilians not taking direct part in hostilities”, and “Intentionally directing attacks against civilian objects" (Article 8 2 (b) (i) and (ii)).'

De International Herald Tribune bericht: 'The European Union criticized Israel on Thursday for "the disproportionate use of force" in Lebanon "in response to attacks by Hezbollah on Israel," according to a statement issued by the current Finnish presidency. It said that "the imposition of an air and sea blockade on Lebanon cannot be justified."'

The Israeli army said it had attacked 15 targets including: a gas depot south of the port town of Sidon, several spots on the highway linking Beirut to the Syrian capital of Damascus, bridges in Beirut and the Hezbollah's headquarters in the southern suburbs.
During the night, Hezbollah also fired rockets at northern Israel, causing no damage and no casualties, the Israeli military said.
In Beirut, the impact of at least seven missiles were heard before dawn today, according to an AP photographer, reporter and other witnesses. Anti-aircraft fire from the ground echoed in other suburbs of Beirut as the planes roared over the Lebanese capital.
The bombs and missiles knocked down a bridge, badly damaged another, sheered off the facades of buildings, blew up windows of apartments and sent walls and balconies crashing on cars parked on the streets.
Lebanese TV footage showed that a bomb had plowed a hole in a main crossroad in south Beirut at Mar Mikhail, on the road that leads out of the capital to the mountains and to Syria.
A young man with blood dripping from his face and covering his entire bare chest and abdomen was seen on TV walking out of a damaged apartment building.
Firemen were seen struggling to put out several fires as glass, aluminum siding and stones littered the streets.
A fuel storage tank hit last night at Beirut's airport was still burning. Another fuel tank at the power plant in the town of Jiye 20 miles south of the Lebanese capital was also in flames, hours after the Israeli air force bombed it Friday morning
Some news reports said a playground where Hezbollah leaders hold rallies for thousands of supporters was also hit...
The guerrilla had warned Israel against attacking south Beirut or the capital itself, saying it would retaliate with rockets against Haifa, Israel's third-largest city. However, Hezbollah denied responsibility for a rocket attack late Thursday on Haifa, saying it would only fire on the Israeli coastal city if the Lebanese capital or its southern suburbs were hit.
The Shiite militia, however, has fired volleys of Katyusha and other rockets on northern Israeli border communities.
Israel has hit hundreds of targets in Lebanon, closing down the country's sole international airport and damaging the main highway to neighboring Syria. As Israeli ships blockade the coast, the assault has largely cut off the country .
Caught in the middle of the fight between Hezbollah and Israel, the Lebanese government has asked the U.N. Security Council to demand a cease-fire by the two sides.
Israel says it holds Lebanon responsible for Hezbollah's snatching of the soldiers. But the Lebanese government insists it had no prior knowledge of the move and did not condone it.' Lees verder: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article1174408.ece

'WORLD POPULATION DAY:Crowded Planet Feels the Heat.

Consider the following statistics: at the beginning of the 20th century, the world population was less than two billion, but at the dawn of the 21st century, there were more than six billion people on earth. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's population clock, the world's population is now 6,527,525,419. Every 14 years, one billion people are added to the planet. At this rate, the total number of people in the world will be a little more than 9.1 billion in 50 years. Although the population growth rate has slowed, the world's population is still growing. The U.S. population is projected to reach 300 million by October. According to a report by the Washington-based group Population Connection, more than half of the world's population will live in cities by 2007, "Making us, for the first time, an urban species." Emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming have also increased significantly since the 20th century. There are greater concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the chief contributors to global warming, in the atmosphere as a result of continued burning of fossil fuels. "We have to look at the overall contribution of human activities as it relates to increased CO2 emissions since industrialisation," said Jay Gulledge, senior research fellow for Science and Impacts at the Pew Centre on Global Climate Change. "There has been a 35 percent increase in the concentration of atmospheric CO2, up from 280 ppm (parts per million) pre-industrial times to a current 380 ppm." As the population increases, particularly in urban areas, the demand for more energy requires power plants that already emit huge volumes of greenhouse gases to produce even more. And as people in lesser developed countries gain access to electricity, more power plants that emit greenhouse gases are built. Population growth also goes hand-in-hand with deforestation and clearing of land to make way for urban sprawl. While living forests act as "carbon sinks", absorbing greenhouse gases, dead and decaying trees emit carbon into the atmosphere. "A third of all current CO2 emissions come from automobiles," Gulledge added. "Coal-fired power plants and heavy industry also accounts for much of the greenhouse gas emissions." "Population growth and global warming are definitely intertwined," Janet Larsen, director of research at the Earth Policy Institute, told IPS. "A growing population means a growing use of energy." The U.S. currently has five percent of the world's population, but produces 25 percent of the world's global warming pollution, according to a report by the U.S.-based environmental group Sierra Club. Together, the most industrialised nations consume 60 percent of the world's fossil fuels. The George W. Bush administration has not offered any indication that it will accept the terms of the Kyoto Protocol, which has been ratified by 163 nations, because it believes that the treaty to reduce CO2 emissions would put a strain on the economy, resulting in a decline in GDP.' 'Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.'

PRESS RELEASE.

Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have committed a new war crime against Palestinian civilians, flagrantly breaching the Fourth Geneva Convention. IOF fighter jets dropped 2 bombs at a 2-story house in a crowded neighborhood in the town of Jabalia. The house belonged to a Hamas leader. The house owner was killed, and so were his wife and 7 of their children. The house was completely destroyed. In addition, 34 civilians were injured, including 5 children and 6 women. Extensive damage was inflicted on 15 houses surrounding the targeted house.
After committing the crime, IOF declared that the bombardment targeted Mohammad El-Deif, the commander of the Hamas military wing, and others with him, claiming that they were in the house. For their part, Hamas confirmed that El-Deif is safe.
This crime is a reminder of the war crime perpetrated on 23 July 2003 to assassinate Salah Shehada, a Hamas leader. In that incident, IOF targeted a residential building in the densely-
populated El-Daraj neighborhood. More than 20 people were killed, including women and children, and dozens were injured.
The latest war crime comes within Israel’s policy of extra-judicial assassinations against Palestinian activists. This policy is criticized by the international community as it leads to casualties among innocent civilians.
With this crime, the number of Palestinians killed since the start of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip rises to 68, including 33 innocent civilians. Two women and 14 children are among the dead.
PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 2:45 on Wednesday, 12 July 2006, an IOF fighter jet dropped 2 bombs at the house belonging to Nabil Abdel Latif Abu Salmeya (46), a leader in Hamas who works as a lecturer in the Islamic University. The 2 bombs hit the 2-story house built on 200 square meters in the Shanti lands are in the town of Jabalia. The house was destroyed on top of the occupants. The owner was killed, and so were his wife Salwa Ismail Abu Salmeya (42) and 7 of their children: Basma (16), Somaya (17, handicapped), Aya (9), Yehya (10), Nasr (7), Huda (13), and Eman (12). The son Awad (19) was rescued, and is suffering from serious injuries. Eyewitnesses indicate that the bodies of the dead were torn and scattered. Work continues to clear the rubble and search for bodies and survivors.
PCHR is greatly concerned over the IOF crimes against Palestinian civilians that have become a trend. The Centre stresses that an arbitrary attack that endangers the lives of civilians and their properties, especially if prior knowledge indicates that civilians could be killed, injured, or have property damaged, is a war crime in the first protocol additional to the Fourth Geneva Convention.
In the Center’s view, the complacency of the international community and the High Contracting Parties of the 4th Geneva Convention and their failure tot take effective steps to stop Israeli war crimes has been a supporting and encouraging element for Israel to continue perpetrating additional war crimes against Palestinian civilians. The legal cover provided to Israel by the US, which purposely hinders International Humanitarian Law, and the conspiracy of silence by Europe encourage Israeli to continue to perpetrate war crimes unchecked, placing it above international law.
The Centre reminds the High Contracting Parties of:
- Their obligations under article 1 of the convention to ensure respect of the convention under all circumstances;
- Their obligations in article 146 of the convention to pursue suspects of committing serious violations of the convention, noting that these violations are war crimes according to article 147, as specified in the first protocol additional to the convention
The Centre calls upon the Swiss Government to:
- to take a leading role in highlighting and acting to stop the grave breaches of international law that are currently taking place in the Gaza Strip, as is its obligation as the depository of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
- to make efforts to mobilise the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to intervene in this situation and meet their obligations to protect the rights of the civilian population of the Gaza Strip under International Humanitarian Law.
- to call on the Security Council to send an international protection force for the Palestinian civilian population of the Gaza Strip.
The Centre calls upon the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to:
- to issue a statement strongly condemning Israel’s grave breaches of international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).
- to make a visit to the OPT in order to see for yourself the long term damage that has already been and is currently being inflicted on the civilian population – a population who should be enjoying protection under International Humanitarian Law.
- to call a meeting of the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention in order to ensure that these states fulfil their obligation under international law to protect the civilian population of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.' Lees verder:

'Israel stepped up its offensive in Lebanon on Thursday, attacking Beirut’s international airport and the southern part of the country, killing more than 36 civilians, Lebanese security officials said, according to the Associated Press news agency.
Three Israeli missiles hit Lebanon’s only international airport, located in the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut, destroying three runways, officials said, adding that the airport was closed after the Israeli attacks. All flights were diverted to Cyprus.
The Israeli military confirmed it struck the airport, claiming that it was used to supply weapons to Hezbollah.
Israel also bombed the building housing the Hezbollah television station al-Manar in southern Beirut, wounding three employees. However, officials said the station continued to broadcast.
The attacks came hours before Israel imposed an air and sea blockade on Lebanon as part of a huge assault to pressure Hezbollah to free two Israeli soldiers captured yesterday in a cross-border raid.' Lees verder: http://www.aljazeera.com/me.asp?service_ID=11691

'Israel Launches Heaviest Bombing of Lebanon in 24 Years; Airport Attacked, Over 40 Civilians Killed.
Overnight raids across southern Lebanon killed up to 47 civilians, including more than 15 children, and wounded over 100 people. Israeli Army Chief of Staff Dan Halutz told Haaretz "Nothing is safe [in Lebanon], as simple as that."

At least 23 Palestinian civilians have died in 24 hours, including nine in one family whose Gaza City home was bombed.' Zie:
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=06/07/13/1421237

Hezbollah is daarvoor verantwoordelijk.

Zinedine Yazid Zidane 5

De Volkskrant bericht op de voorpagina:

'Zidane heeft geen spijt van kopstoot
Van onze correspondent Fokke Obbema
PARIJS - ‘Het was heel ernstig, heel persoonlijk.

In Tel Aviv, Jeruzalem?

He also has a blog, "Beat the Press," where he discusses the media's coverage of economic issues. It can be found at the CEPR website, www.cepr.net.

In Truthout schrijft hij:

'The WTO and the World's Poor.
As President Bush once tried to say, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." Paul Wolfowitz, who fooled us once when he was pitching the line about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq as the Deputy Secretary of Defense, is now out to fool us again. In his new job as president of the World Bank, he is pitching the line that a new WTO agreement is the best way to help the world's poor.
His basic story is that protectionist barriers and subsidies in rich countries, especially in agriculture, are hugely harmful to the world's poor. He claims that if these barriers were removed, it would provide enormous benefits to the world's poor. Given Mr. Wolfowitz's track record, anyone who is not a fool would examine his claims very closely.
The standard economic models don't provide a basis for great hopes about a new WTO agreement. One recent analysis showed that the worldwide gains would be $54 billion a year. This might sound impressive, until you realize that it is equal to approximately 0.1 percent of world income. According to this model, approximately 1.9 percent of the gains would go to the world's poor, or close to $2 billion a year. With 1 billion poor people, this translates into an average gain of $2 a year.
Even this story might be too optimistic. Some of the world's poor will end up as losers from a WTO agreement. Cutting back subsidies to rich country farmers could be good news to the farmers who compete with them in the developing world, but it is surely bad news to consumers of these crops. They will have to pay more for their food. Some developing countries are net importers of agricultural products. They will end up as losers because they will be paying higher prices for their imports, with little or no gain on their exports.
The standard models also assume that the work force will remain fully employed. In the real world, workers who lose their jobs in the agricultural sector in developing countries may not be able to simply find new employment elsewhere. The mass displacement in Mexico's agricultural sector that followed in the wake of NAFTA has been one of the factors driving immigration into the United States.' Zinedine Yazid Zidane 4

We all do...'

Mensen worden vermoord, oud of jong, man of vrouw.
